Clooney awarded Peace Summit prize

George Clooney

George Clooney and Don Cheadle will both be honoured by a collection of Nobel laureates for their charity work in the Darfur region of Sudan.

The two actors have worked hard raising money and offering support to the war-torn area and now they will be presented with the 2007 Peace Summit Award by the 8th World Summit of Nobel Peace Prize Laureates - including former Soviet President Michael Gorbachev, former US President Jimmy Carter, the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu - at its annual gathering in Rome on 13 December.

The World Summit announced yesterday that Clooney and Cheadle are being honoured for promoting peace in Darfur and 'for their commitment to saving human lives and alleviating the suffering of civilian victims of the conflict.'

Archbishop Tutu spoke warmly of the two actors efforts saying: 'I am always moved when I see artists such as George and Don use their positions to speak up for the most vulnerable of our fellow human beings.'

In the last two years both actors have spent time in the Darfur region of Sudan striving to highlight the predicament of war refugees there. They have met with government leaders about the continued civil war in the area and also featured in the 2007 documentary Darfur Now, a call to action for people everywhere to help end the crisis in the country.
