THEY'VE BEEN A national telly institution for twenty years, but Richard and Judy's chat show has been scrapped by Channel 4, six years after they joined the company.

The decision to end the show, said to be mutual between the presenters and Channel 4, comes after a dip in ratings and the phone-in scandal earlier this year on the You Say We Pay quiz.

It marks the end of an era for the married team who found fame presenting This Morning in 1988.

They defected to Channel 4 in 2001, but the show's future hung in the balance ever since.

Both Richard and Judy were said to be upset when Channel 4 cut the number of shows broadcast by sharing their 5pm slot with the Paul O'Grady show.

A friend of the couple told the Daily Mail: 'They have taken the show as far as they wanted to and they want to take on fresh challenges.'

Channel 4 insiders said, however, that the show was unlikely to have been recommissioned.

There will be two final series next year, following the usual pattern of a ten-week run at the beginning of the year, followed by another one in the summer.

But, don't worry, you'll still be able to get your Richard and Judy fix ? they'll continue to present a book club series and specials on C4, including A Summer Read and The British Book Awards.
