Mel C: I feared reunion tour would re-ignite eating disorder

Marie Claire Blog: Spice Girls reunite for photo shoot

MEL C HAS revealed she was initially reluctant to reform the Spice Girls for fear she would re-develop the depression and eating disorder she suffered when they were at the height of their fame.

The 33-year-old fought hard to battle the depression and anorexia that plagued her when they were first catapulted in to the public eye.

'The girls approached me and said they were getting together to do a world tour, a greatest hits album and a big goodbye, and I was like, 'Oh, no.' It was the last thing I wanted to hear,' she told Closer magazine.

'All four of them had spoken about it and it was set in stone. They basically said if I wanted to do it great but if I didn't want to do it then they were going to do it anyway.

'I'd always said I'd never do it. But I didn't want to miss out and have regrets. I also didn't want to be the person that stopped it being the complete five. I was scared I'd be the villain.

She added: 'The depression and everything else was in my thoughts during the decision process of whether to do the tour. It took me a long time to decide because it was something I never ever wanted to do.'

Mel says she's now confident and happy in herself – and wants to rectify the bad example she gave to youngsters when she was training excessively and not eating properly.

'I've been on the straight and narrow for four years. But I had to be sensible and evaluate what I wanted to do. And I want this reunion.

'I'm happy with my body. I've reached a good place. I'm healthy but I like Guinness and crisps,' she laughs.

'I was underweight and my image was unhealthy. There were kids who were looking up to me. I want to rectify any of the damage I caused.

'I got so thin my period stopped and my bones became very fragile. I may have done permanent damage.'

Meanwhile, the group have embarked on pole dancing lessons at the Soho Revue Bar in preparation for a raunchy performance during their upcoming world tour. (24 October 2007)
