Stuart Townsend: Charlize Theron and I are 'married'

Who needs a big white dress, wedding rings and a piece of paper to be married? Stuart Townsend and Charlize Theron don't think you do.

The stunning couple, who have been together for seven years and met on the set of Trapped, say they're married - even if not legally.

'I didn't do a church wedding or anything, but we're married. We're husband and wife,' Townsend tells People magazine.

'We love each other and we want to spend our lives together. We didn't have a ceremony, but I don't need a certificate or the state or the church to say otherwise. So no there's no big official story on a wedding, but we are married. ... I consider her my wife and she considers me her husband.'

The couple have recently been at the Toronto Film Festival together promoting Townsend's directorial and writing debut, Battle in Seattle - a dramatized look at the 1999 World Trade Organization convention and the protests that overtook the city of Seattle and caused a state of emergency - in which Theron also stars.

Townsend said of the premiere: 'She's proud and she was crying, so it's as important to her as it's important to me. We're a team and we're in this together. That's what you do. You look out for each other.
