Jude Law to play Hamlet in West End

Jude

Jude Law is to play Hamlet in London's West End.

After rumours were rife that David Tennant was set to take the role and put filming of Doctor Who on hold, it has now been revealed that Law will take to the stage instead.

The new Shakespeare production, directed by Kenneth Branagh, will not be performed until 2009 and will open at the Donmar Warehouse theatre in Covent Garden.

The 34-year-old actor has recently worked with Branagh on the upcoming remake of Sleuth, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival last week. In the updated version, Law plays an adulteress hairdresser opposite Sir Michael Caine.

Law has said in the past that he longed to play the Prince of Denmark. The artistic director of the Donmar theatre, Michael Grandage, said: 'Jude was on the record as saying he wanted to tackle Hamlet at some point.'

Law is no stranger to London theatre where he has performed in 'Tis A Pity She's A Whore in 1999 and Doctor Faustus in 2002.
