Britney embarrassed after MTV Video Music Awards

Marei Claire news: Britney Spears performing at the MTV Video Music Awards

Britney Spears' comeback at the MTV Video Music Awards is being universally slammed just a day after the show.

Some blamed the spangly outfit and blonde weave, others the MTV organisers, but the popstrel's return, performing her new single Gimme More has been criticised across the entertainment industry – from Whoopi Goldberg to The New York Times.

The New York Times wrote: 'She didn't disappoint; she was awful. Visibly nervous, she tottered around the stage, dancing tentatively and doing nothing that sounded or looked like real live singing.'

Whilst the The New York Post was equally damning saying Britney was: 'Totally lame, pathetically lip-synched,' 'As for "Gimme More," said the paper, "the song about lusting for too much wasn't enough to launch a dinghy, let alone re-launch the career of this ditzy disaster."

Those backstage revealed: 'Britney was supposed to wear a matching corset that she opted out of wearing at the last minute,' a source told people.com. 'She was just plain nervous because of all the hype and she's embarrassed.'

'She was extremely nervous. It's been a while since she's done this, and she was performing in front of all her peers, on live TV. She just got out there and froze,' says a source who was backstage.'
