BRAD PITT CALLS NEW ORLEANS GREEN HOUSING PROJECT 'SMALL VICTORY'

Brad Pitt showed his commitment to environmental and social issues yesterday, by touring the construction site of his green housing project in New Orleans.



Pitt, who was chairman of the design competition for the homes, coincided his visit with the second anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, which left parts of New Orleans devastated and took hundreds of lives.



The project, built in co-operation with Global Green and the Home Depot Foundation and due for completion next year, has solar panels to generate its own electricity and is being built with green products and energy-efficient systems.



It's part of a development that will include five single-family homes and an 18-apartment complex that should be able to hold up to 23 families.



'There will be a family living in here a year from now, and this is a home that treats them with dignity, with respect, that is conscious of their quality of life,' Brad tells People magazine.



'[Hurricane] Katrina was a man-made disaster. This house here is a man-made solution. We knew we couldn't bring back the families and friends who were lost, bring back the heirlooms and pictures, but maybe, in the process of rebuilding, we could build something smarter to create a better way of life.'



Brad and Angelina settled in the French Quarter of New Orleans while he was filming The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button. He says of the city: 'My family and I are very happy to be back here in this great place. We love it here very much. It's important economically and culturally.'
