All hail Lorde the Queen of feathers

Much like previous years (remember when Kanye interrupted Taylor's speech?), the MTV VMAs 2017 had their fair share of memorable moments. There was the big reveal of Taylor Swift's new video, Look What You Made Me Do, with all its subtle references, and Pink's powerful speech about her daughter and body image.

But on stage wasn't the only place celebs were making a statement, they were doing it on the red carpet too. Ke$ha made her red carpet comeback after releasing her first single in four years earlier this month, and to mer her dreamy ruffled dress was the perfect way to symbolise a new beginning.

Meanwhile, Lorde shunned her usual dark colours in favour of a lilac feather dress by Monique Lhuillier, which totally stole the show.

Katy Perry went quite demure in a white dress, but did jazz things up with some statement hoop earrings. Some fans suggested it was a subtle message to Taylor Swift, who dropped her new music video at the event. Their feud is legendary, and Taylor's new music video is supposedly a dig at Katy, and Katy's choice of white might be a way to show she is the bigger, more peaceful person. Who knows? Either way, it's fabulous.

Mel B wore a sequin dress emblazoned with the words 'You Will Never Own Me', no doubt in reference to her ex Stephen Belafonte, who was allegedly abusive towards her.

Millie Bobby Brown, at just 13, slayed it in a gold-embellished Rodarte dress, toughened up with biker boots, which to me totally encapsulates what the VMAs are all about: fun, carefree and edgy.

Scroll down for all the best looks from the red carpet.

This dreamy Monique Lhuillier dress was definitely a bit of a departure for Lorde, who usually favours a more Gothic vibe, and she suited the pale lilac and feathers beautifully.

Katy Perry is always one to make a fashion statement (see her Met Gala 2017 dress), so this Stephane Rolland dress is quite demure for her, but I like how she elevated it with some giant hoop earrings.

I love it when a celeb wears high street on the red carpet, and I’d never have guessed this chic tux dress was from H&M.

Can we just take a moment to appreciate how fashion Millie Bobby Brown is, considering she’s only 13? This Rodarte dress, teamed with biker boots, is the ultimate example.

Penny Goldstone

Penny Goldstone is the Digital Fashion Editor at Marie Claire, covering everything from catwalk trends to royal fashion and the latest high street and Instagram must-haves.

Penny grew up in France and studied languages and law at the Sorbonne Nouvelle University in Paris before moving to the UK for her MA in multimedia journalism at Bournemouth University. She moved to the UK permanently and has never looked back (though she does go back regularly to stock up on cheese and wine).

Although she's always loved fashion - she used to create scrapbooks of her favourite trends and looks, including Sienna Miller and Kate Moss' boho phase - her first job was at MoneySavingExpert.com, sourcing the best deals for everything from restaurants to designer sales.

However she quit after two years to follow her true passion, fashion journalism, and after many years of internships and freelance stints at magazines including Red, Cosmopolitan, Stylist and Good Housekeeping, landed her dream job as the Digital Fashion Editor at Marie Claire UK.

Her favourite part of the job is discovering new brands and meeting designers, and travelling the world to attend events and fashion shows. Seeing her first Chanel runway IRL at Paris Fashion Week was a true pinch-me moment.
