Looks like we got our hopes up for nothing

Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling have remained famously private about their relationship since they began dating in 2012, so when reports came in in that the actor has just married his long-term girlfriend, Eva Mendes, in a secret ceremony, we were super excited.

However, PEOPLE has confirmed the couple are not in fact married, and the rumours are false. So we got our hopes up all for nothing.

Eva and Ryan may be 100% secretive about their relationship, but when it comes to their children, the couple allow themselves to be a (little) bit more open...

Fans of the famous couple will know that their most recent addition Amada Lee – reportedly born this April – shares a name with elder sister Esmerelda Amada. And in her latest interview, Mendes has opened up about motherhood and explained the reason she chose the same moniker for her girls.

Mendes revealed that her and Gosling simply couldn’t settle on a name they liked more - and that it also has a family connection.

'My grandmother’s name is Amada, and Esmeralda Amada is the name of our eldest,' she tells Latina magazine.

'We had a few names picked out for our new baby, and when she was born, we didn’t feel like those names were her.'

'We came up with a few more, even that morning, and tried them out. We were like, ‘What about Viviana?’ But we just kept going back to Amada.'

Mendes hails from Florida but has Cuban parents, and explains it not unusual in Latin culture for siblings to share names.

'I used to know five sisters that were all Maria del Carmen, Maria Elena, Maria Liliana,' she explained.

With both daughters under two, Mendes said she’s currently working on juggling the early stages of being a mum while trying to build on their bond as siblings. 'My little one is still an infant, and right now it’s really about surviving those nights and trying to enjoy this time as much as possible with them, and start the bond between Esmeralda and Amada.'

She also shared that she’s taking every opportunity to introduce her young daughters to Latin culture, saying: 'I speak to them in Spanish, and my mom speaks to Esmeralda in Spanish. Any time I have an opportunity to introduce them—I have to say ‘them’ now, though my newborn just sleeps all the time—to my culture, whether it’s through music, or through food, I do.'

Recently, Gosling sung the praises of being brought up with his mum and sister, and of his own female-dominated brood (yes, when he uttered the words 'women are better than men'). So we can safely assume that things are pretty blissful in the Mendes-Gosling household right now - even if things do get a little confusing when they bring up the kids by name.
