The Great Gatsby To Open Cannes Film Festival 2013

We can look forward to seeing Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan and Tobey Maguire hit the red carpet in Cannes

The Great Gatsby will open the Cannes Film Festival 2013, it’s been confirmed.

Leonardo DiCaprio, who plays the lead in Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of F Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel, will attend the glitzy event for the first time in six years.

The film’s other big stars, namely Carey Mulligan, who plays Daisy Buchanan, and Tobey Maguire, who is narrator Nick Carraway, will also walk the red carpet at the film festival. As will Jay-Z, who has provided the soundtrack to the highly-anticipated movie.

Luhrmann said it was a ‘great honour’ to be opening the festival and said Cannes was a special place for him.

‘We are thrilled to return to a country, place and festival that has always been so close to our hearts,’ he said.

‘Not only because my first film Strictly Ballroom was screened there 21 years ago, but also because F Scott Fitzgerald wrote some of the most poignant and beautiful passages of his extraordinary novel just a short distance away at a villa outside Saint-Raphaël.’

The screening, on May 15, will take place in 3D. The Canne Film Festival runs from May 15- 26.
