The big screen version of Sex and the City has become the fastest-selling DVD of the year, selling nearly one million copies in its first week of release.

Fans eager to relive the adventures of Carrie and Co. bought 920,000 DVDs since the film went on sale on September 22.

Figures from the Official Charts Company show Sex and the City: The Movie beat the Disney animated film Ratatouille, which sold 700,000 in its first week earlier this year, into second place.

The OCC predicts sales of the story of the four New York women will hit one million by the end of the week.

The film spent two weeks at the top of the UK charts when it was released in cinemas earlier this year. It took $56.8m (£31.8m) in its US opening weekend.

Sarah Jessica Parker, who plays Carrie, says she was overwhelmed with the success of the film.

'I wouldn't know anyone who might have expected this,' she said at the launch of the DVD in New York on September 19.

'It's taken all of us by surprise… It's been an enormously wonderful experience but it exceeded any of my expectations.'

Titanic is still the fastest-selling DVD of all time, shifting 2.3m copies on DVD and video in 1998.
