Robert Pattinson appeared on The Daily Show to promote new film Cosmopolis, and it was awkward!

Robert Pattinson ran the media gauntlet for the first time since it was revealed that Kristen Stewart had cheated on him, and it was awkward.

The actor appeared on The Daily Show in New York yesterday to promote his latest movie, Cosmopolis, but the show's host, Jon Stewart, preferred to delve for information about the Kristen Stewart drama than ask him about the new project.

Stewart even plied Rob with Ben & Jerry's ice cream as he attempted to shoehorn Kristen Stewart's affair with married father-of-two Rupert Sanders into the interview.

Pattinson, 26, did very well in his own bumbling and charming way to dodge any personal questions but it made for agonising viewing.

At one point the Twilight star berated himself for not having hired a publicist to help him script some witty answers. He said: 'This is the weird things about these interviews, and now I'm going to sound like an idiot, but my biggest problem in my life is that I'm cheap.

'I didn't hire a publicist and every awkward interview, most actors have things scripted. I'm going to hire a publicist.'

But Jon Stewart persisted, and tried to bring Rob's relationship with Kristen up again, saying: 'The last time I had a bad break-up, Ben & Jerry's got me through the tough times, so I thought you and I could talk about things?'

Putting on a silly voice, he then joked: 'Boy, you are better off without... so kick her to the curb!'

Pattinson was a good sport and laughed along but refused to be drawn on the subject. Finally giving in, Stewart said: 'When you are young and you break-up, it feels like the world is ending but this is the first time I have actually seen the world react that way. It's insanity!

'So here is my wish for you, that you get to handle your business in your personal life and I wish you all the best.'
