Reese Witherspoon has finally spoken out about her arrest, admitting she was 'so disrespectful' to police officers, and hated telling her children

Reese Witherspoon has spoken out about her arrest for the first time, admitting she and husband Jim Toth 'made a mistake' and should know better than to drive while over the limit.

Speaking on American breakfast show Good Morning America, the contrite actress admitted she was 'disrespectful' to the police officer who arrested her, and told viewers she is 'so sorry and just so embarrassed'.

'We went out to a restaurant in Atlanta, and we had one too many glasses of wine,' the 34-year-old actress explained.

'We thought we were fine to drive, and we were absolutely not, and we are so sorry and just so embarrassed. We know better and we shouldn't have done that.'

Blaming 'poor judgement' for the incident, which saw Jim Toth and Reese Witherspoon arrested and hauled to the station by officers, the Oscar-winner added: 'We made a mistake, and it was something that will absolutely never happen again.'

The actress also referred to her her behaviour as 'disrespectful,' and even claimed she thought she knew the law, after playing a lawyer in the movies.

'I was so disrespectful to him,' she said of the officer who made the arrest. 'I have police officers in my family. I work with police officers every day. I know better. It's just unacceptable. I played a lawyer in a movie so many times I think I am a lawyer. And clearly I'm not a lawyer, because I got arrested.'

She continued: 'I have no idea what I was saying. That night I saw him arresting my husband, and I panicked. I said all kinds of crazy things. I said I was pregnant. I'm not pregnant. I said crazy things. I had no idea what I was talking about.'

Telling children 13-year-old Ava and 9-year-old Deacon was 'the hardest part about it,' she said.

'When you make a mistake, you take responsibility, and we are taking responsibility, and we are doing everything within our power to make it right.'

Lesson learned? 'When a police officer tells you to stay in a car, you stay in a car'.

Reese Witherspoon was arrested along with her husband earlier this month, after police spotted their car driving erratically in the early hours of the morning.

The actress reportedly denied repeated requests to stay in the car, before telling the officer: 'You're going to be on national news.'

Jim Toth was charged with DUI and Reese Witherspoon with disorderly conduct.
