The star scooped a trio of awards as she cleaned up at last night’s music awards ceremony

The stars were out in force at last night's Brit Awards, but it was Lady Gaga who won big, scooping a trio of awards.

Dressed in a showshopper only she could pull off, Lady G took home gongs for Best International Female, Best International Album and Best International Breakthrough Act.

It was also a big night for X Factor favourites JLS, who waltzed off with awards for British Breakthrough Act and British Single, pipping Judge Cheryl Cole to the post.

But Ms Cole didn't let that get her down, putting in a high-energy performance of her chart-topping hit Fight For This Love.

Fellow Brit Lily Allen scooped the much anticipated Best British Female award despite being convinced that she would walk away empty handed, and graced the stage to accept her gong in a luminous orange wig.

‘I only wore this orange wig because I thought I would make it more difficult for the cameramen to find me and catch my disappointed face,' she giggled into the mic.

It was also a great night for Florence and the Machine, who took home the Best Album award.

Other stars who picked up prizes included Dizzee Rascal for Best Male, Kasabian for Best British Band and Robbie Williams, who confirmed his place as the prince of pop by being given an Outstanding Contribution Award.

And voters chose the Spice Girls for Best British Performance of 30 years.

But the Brits rarely goes without a hitch. Last night's controversy was caused by Oasis front man Liam Gallagher, who accepted the gong for Best British Album for 30 Years tossed it into the crowd and swiftly exited the stage.

That aside, it really was a great night for the best of British.
