The pair were finally sent home this weekend, after voters put them in the bottom two

After weeks of controversy and speculation, love or hate contestants Wagner Carrilho and Katie Waissel were both sent home last night, in a shock double eviction X Factor show.

With the semi-finals looming, the competition was hotting up, with acts performing not just one but two songs on Saturday’s show.

But it seems Katie, Wagner and Mary just didn’t cut the mustard, with the trio landing themselves in the bottom three during the tense elimination round.

Cheryl’s controversial contestant Katie Waissel was the first to face the axe, after receiving the lowest number of public votes, leaving over 28s Wagner and Mary to battle it out during the sing off.

But Wagner’s (rather appropriate) rendition of the Nat King Cole classic Unforgettable was no match for Mary’s Shirley Bassey song This Is My Life, and finally earned him a passage out of the show.

This week Cheryl Cole dished out the casting vote - and all eyes were on the star, after her public spat with Wagner last week – but despite booting him out of the competition, she used her airtime to make her peace with the controversial singer.

‘Wagner I know me and you haven't always seen eye to eye,’ she told the Brazilian. 'But you have been a gracious man and apologised to me and I accept that.'

Simon supported Mrs C's decision, adding that they were fighting back against members of the public trying to ‘derail’ the show.

‘Why I am happy with the decision is because there were people out there trying to derail this show for different reasons and what has happened tonight is that we have put this show back in the hands of the public,’ he said.

And with just five acts left in the competition – Matt, Rebecca, Cher, One Direction and Mary – the pressure is well and truly on for next week’s semi-finals.
