Kate Middleton and the topless photo scandal keeps rolling on with the latest development seeing the editor of the Irish Daily Star being suspended after he took the decision to publish the paparazzi shots.

Michael O'Kane allowed the pictures of the Duchess of Cambridge sunbathing topless on a private balcony to appear in the Saturday edition of the newspaper. He followed behind French Closer magazine who were the first to publish the photos with Italian title, Chi, following suit.

The publishers of the Irish Daily Star, Independent Star who share joint ownership of the newspaper with Northern & Shell (publishers of the UK edition), announced yesterday that they have suspended the editor.

They released a statement saying: ‘Independent Star Limited has suspended editor Michael O'Kane with immediate effect, pending an investigation into the circumstances that led to the Irish Daily Star re-publishing pages from the French magazine Closer, which contained images of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

‘Independent Star Limited has no further comment pending conclusion of the joint investigation by the newspaper's shareholders.’

And that isn’t the only bad news for the newspaper, Richard Desmond, owner of Northern & Shell, has threatened to pull its funding following the incident.

Rather than shy away from the scandal, Michael O’Kane defends his actions claiming Kate Middleton should not be treated differently to any other celebrity.

He said: ‘She's not the future queen of Ireland, so really the only place this is causing fury seems to be in the UK.

‘She decides to partially disrobe on a balcony where it can be seen from a public road and she's stunned now, or the Palace are annoyed that people are interested in this.’

The Duke and Duchess’ lawyers appear in court later today seeking an injunction over further publication of the photos.
