Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge has whisked two-month-old Prince George away to meet his grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh, in Balmoral.

The Duchess spent the weekend shopping on Sloane Street in Kensington while her sister Pippa Middleton joined Prince William and Prince Harry at the society wedding of their friends James Meade and Lady Laura Marsham. It's thought that she missed the nuptials so she could prepare for her baby son's first trip to royal retreat Balmoral, to meet Prince Philip for the very first time.

Prince William, Duchess Kate and Prince George flew to Balmoral Castle yesterday and will spend the rest of the week there. Prince Philip missed out on meeting Prince George when he was first born as the 92-year-old had been in hospital recovering from abdominal surgery.

A royal source told The Mirror: 'This was an incredible moment for Philip. He has been desperate to meet his great grandson and having the family together is really special for him. This has been a very busy time for the Duke and Duchess. They have always been determined to introduce George to Philip as soon as possible, but there just hasn't been the time until now. This will be a very special holiday for them all.'

Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall are thought to be staying at Birkhall, the royal residence next to Balmoral, and reports suggest that the family plan to take a rare generation family photo, featuring Prince Philip, Prince Charles, Prince William and Prince George.
