Two hats worn by Kate Middleton have been sold for well over their estimated going price

Two hats rented and worn by Kate Middleton have been sold at auction for a whopping £7,000.

The first of Kate's hats to go under the hammer was the black and white Philip Somerville straw hat, which the Duchess of Cambridge wore to the Order of the Garter service in June 2008.

The striking headwear, which Kate wore only once fetched £3,224.

Next up was the wide-brimmed black Aurora hat as worn by Kate at the nuptials of Prince William's close friend Harry Meade.

That hat was sold for £3,720 by the same anonymous owner.

Kate's hats, which she rented for £100 a time from a shop near her Berkshire home, were expected to go for around £1,000-£1,500 each at the Kerry Taylor auction in London.
