If these words are anything to go by, Kate Hudson is a lucky daughter...

There are many reasons why Goldie Hawn rocks: not only has she starred in some of our favourite movies, at 69 she shows no signs of even remotely slowing down. Not only that, she looks amazing. In addition to all these things, she seems like she's a truly inspiring mum and now we have her own words to prove it.

Goldie Hawn opened up to 'Oprah's Master Class', admitting the difficulties of stepping back and letting go, but revealing an unlikely Greek mythological tale as her ultimate mothering inspiration.

'One of my favourite stories is Demeter and Persephone,' Goldie explains. 'It's a story of a mother and daughter, and how the mother was everything to that daughter. The daughter looked at her, and the sun rose and set on her. And they had so much fun together.'

True to real life, however: 'She had to become a woman, and she had to leave the clutches of her mother, in order to define who she is.

The myth follows that Persephone is abducted by Hades, god of the underworld. Grieving for the loss of her daughter, Demeter's grief impacts the seasons. Springtime and summer no longer exist and crops die. Hades eventually agrees to allow Persephone to return to her mother.

Goldie re-tells: 'She said, 'If I can have my daughter back for half of the year, I will create summer and spring. Her daughter came back - greater, more formed.'

True to Goldie's hippie-roots, her own take on this unique tale says a lot about her own views on mothering:

'What this is, is an example of how we as mothers have to be able to not just pass the baton, but to be able to give free reign for your daughter to grow, to make mistakes, doesn't mean they're not watched. But it means that they're honoured. You watch them [become individuals], you watch them fight you.

'That's what being a mother is also, is witnessing. Just be there. You don't always have to power over. I believe that this is one of the most important things as a parent you can do... to let go, in times, so these children can formulate their own identity.'

What can we say? That's got us a bit teary! Kate Hudson is one lucky daughter...
