Gisele Bundchen recalls the 'challenging situation' of hubby's love child
Gisele Bundchen has finally opened up about how she felt when it was revealed her now-husband’s ex-girlfriend was expecting his baby.
The Brazilian supermodel and American footballer Tom Brady – who married in February – learnt that his ex-girlfriend, actress Bridget Moynahan, was expecting his baby two months after he and Gisele started dating.
‘It was definitely a surprise for both of us,’ Gisele told Vanity Fair. But the star insists that little John Edward has ultimately strengthened their relationship, after a bumpy start.
‘In the beginning you’re living this romantic fantasy; you’re thinking, “This can’t be true, it’s so good!”‘ she says of her relationship. ‘And then, Whoops – wake-up call!’
The shock news came 2½ months after she had met Brady through a friend in late 2006, when she was instantly attracted to him thanks to his ‘charismatic smile’.
With Moynahan’s news, however, ‘It was a very challenging situation,’ says Bündchen. ‘Obviously, in the beginning, it’s not the ideal thing.’
And, consequently, she wondered whether she should urge Brady to give things another go with Moynahan. ‘You question at times – “Should I stay here? Maybe you should work this out,”‘ says Bündchen. ‘But when people break up, it’s for a reason.’
Working through the situation together ultimately cemented their bond.
‘It was a blessing, because otherwise I don’t think I would have known what he was made of, and he wouldn’t have known what I was made of,’ she says, noting his integrity and ‘the way he was a good person through all the times. I was like, “You have the heart in a good place!” It made me feel more in love with him; it made me realise who he was.’
And Gisele has easily stepped into the role of Stepmum, but has never met Bridget. ‘I understand that he has a mum, and I respect that, but to me it’s not like because somebody else delivered him, that’s not my child. I feel it is, 100 percent,’ Gisele says.
‘I want him to have a great relationship with his mum, because that’s important, but I love him the same way as if he were mine. I already feel like he’s my son, from the first day.’
