Girls Aloud devastated fans last night by announcing they are splitting for good.

After wrapping up their Ten: The Hits Tour with a final performance in Liverpool, Kimberley Walsh, Cheryl Cole, Nadine Coyle, Sarah Harding and Nicola Roberts announced that their time as a group had come to an end.

The five piece broke the news to fans on their twitter page, writing: 'Dear Alouders, we just want to say from the bottom of our hearts Thank you!!

'This tour has been an amazing experience and the perfect chance to say thank you for being on this journey with us through a decade. It has far exceeded any of our dreams and we hope we are forever your inspiration and reminder that dreams really do glitter!!

'Your love and support will stay with us forever but we have now come to the end of our incredible time together . Love you lots.'

Girls Aloud, who found fame on Popstars: The Rivals back in 2002, confirmed their reunion in October with a 20-gig tour.

Earlier in the day Cheryl Cole took to twitter hinting at the impending split, writing: 'And now we're here !! One of my favourite places ever for the last show !! Liverpool!!! LETS GOOOOO...'

While bandmate Nadine Coyle tweeted after the emotional show: 'Happy tears. I cannot thank you enough. I love seeing all your faces. Ok more tears. I love you all forever. Xxxxx NC'
