Our favourite period drama, Downton Abbey, has been nominated for Outstanding Drama Series and has pulled in 11 other nominations at the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards, which will air on 22 September.

Michelle Dockery, who plays Lady Mary in the hit series, has been nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a drama series, where she'll be competing against actresses like Claire Danes (Homeland), Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men) and Connie Britton (Nashville) for the coveted statue.

Hugh Bonneville, who stars as Robert Crawley, the Earl of Grantham in Downton Abbey, has also earned top honours with a nomination in the Outstanding Lead Actor category, which also sees Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Kevin Spacey (House of Cards), Jeff Daniels (The Newsroom) and fellow Brit Damian Lewis (Homeland) in the running.

Other nominees from Downton Abbey include show favourite Dame Maggie Smith (Outstanding Supporting Actress), who plays the acerbic Lady Violet Crawley and Jim Carter (Outstanding Supporting Actor), who stars as devoted butler Carson.

Downton Abbey has also been nominated in the costume design, hairstyling, casting, music composition and art direction categories, with Jeremy Webb receiving a nod for best direction and Julian Fellowes scoring a nomination for outstanding writing.
