David Beckham has opened up about how Victoria Beckham helped him through one of the most difficult periods in his life.

The former footballer told how Posh was his shining light after the 1998 World Cup, when a red card left him the most hated man in Britain.

Death threats were only some of the turmoil David faced as angry England fans hit back after the Argentina loss.

‘Living through that was really difficult. It was hard for me to talk about it on camera,’ Becks told The Metro.

‘It’s hard for me to talk about in general because it was such a difficult time, not just for me as an individual but for my family.’

But coming back from his darkest hour wasn’t easy, as he says his then-finacée was his backbone.

‘My family kind of over the years have gone through the highs and lows too,' he told the newspaper.

Adding: ‘That was a real low for my family but I got through it because of them and because of the fans and the players that I had, who were with me at the time. The reason I got through that dark time is because of them.

Now one of the most loved families in Britain, Posh and Becks have gone on to build an incredible empire of sporting, fashion and business success.

David will reveal more about life behind the scenes in The Class of 92, which premieres on Sunday.
