It’s thought Cheryl – who is currently soaking up the sun in South Africa with close pal and rumoured beau Derek Hough – impressed execs during a series of meetings before Christmas, and could be signed up soon.

And now, adding further fuel to the fire, Peter Rice, head of entertainment at network giant Fox has opened up about the possibility of having the star on board.

‘If Cheryl was to be on the show, I think she’s proved that she’s a terrific judge,’ he told reporters at a US TV event. ‘She has a wonderful chemistry with Simon.’

Peter confirmed the American judging panel will see the same format as the UK version of the show, adding execs were still very much in charge of final spots on the sought after judging panel.

‘It will be four judges as it is in England – it’s two men, two women… one of which will be Simon,’ he said.

'Simon’s going to come to us and he’s going to say, "This is who I would like the judges to be," and we’ll have a conversation about it.'

Already a massive fan of the X Factor, Rice told reporters he is ‘excited’ about the show, and said bosses are expecting it to be a massive hit with US viewers when it airs later this year.

'I think it’s an amazing TV show... It’s just so well produced, so fun, so wildly entertaining… I think if they discover the next Susan Boyle next year on X Factor - that’s not something that will happen on Idol,’ he said.

'The other thing which I find most different about it is the way in which the judges own the groups, or own their categories, really differentiates the show. I’m really excited to bring the show here.'
