Britney Spears sets date for new album

Britney Spears has set a momentous date - her 27th birthday - for the release of her new album.

The star's label, Jive/ Zomba, released a statement revealing the 2 December - the day Britney turns 27 - will be the day she launches Circus, her sixth and latest album.

Britney burst on to the music scene in 1998 with her debut album Baby One More Time, which was followed up with the equally popular Oops! I Did it Again.

But, despite being certified platinum, her 2007 album, Blackout, which came at a time of great personal trauma for Spears, was one of her least successful.

So, after a return to form at this year's MTV Video Music Awards - where Britney picked up three Moonmen for her track Piece of Me - high hopes are being pinned on her 2008 comeback album.

Despite her tumultous last two years, which saw Britney shave her head, be hospitalised in a psychiatric ward, suffer a bitter divorce battle, and lose custody of her children, she remains one of the biggest-selling female artists of the last decade.
