Britney Spears performs in sparkly bra and knickers at VMAs

It was supposed to be an explosive performance to mark her career comeback - but the only thing that sparkled about Britney Spears' act was the bra and knickers she performed in.

The singer treated the audience to a rendition of her latest song Gimme More, and flashed her flesh, while backing dancers pole danced in front of a red background.

But reports say the show, which Spears worked on with illusionist Criss Angel, was a let-down.

Hip-hop star Akon commented on the performance backstage to People magazine, saying: 'That could have been better. She needed to focus more. She looked nervous and I think the pressure got to her.'

Britney has a history of using shock tactics to wow at the VMAs, famously kissing Madonna in one show, and dancing with a huge snake draped around her neck for another eye-popping performance.

But, it seems, this year's act went out with a fizzle, rather than the much-anticipated bang.
