Icelandic pop icon puts out a message of support to jailed Russian group Pussy Riot

Following in the footsteps of Madonna, eccentric Icelandic popstar Bjork has come out with a public message of support for jailed Russian punk group Pussy Riot.

She posted a message on her website expressing her disdain at their trial and inviting them to join her onstage to sing her song 'Declare Independence' once they are freed.

In the statement Bjork says: ' Here comes a statement in defense of Pussy Riot: as a musician and a mother I would like to express I fiercely don't agree with them being put to jail because of their peaceful protest performance. They are currently standing trial and facing seven years in prison for this.

' In my opinion the Russian authorities should let them go home to their families and children. I would like to invite Pussy Riot to join me in a particular song on stage: which was written for all enhancement of justice (you can guess which one) warmth, björk.'

Three members of the all-female punk band are currently on trial for hooliganism after performing a protest song against Vladamir Putin in a church last February.

Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alekhina and Yekaterina Samutsevich face the prospect of seven years behind bars when they are sentenced next week.

The high profile case has been slammed by stars including Elijah Wood, Jarvis Cocker and Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand.
