Beyoncé sued by Abercrombie & Fitch
By Lucy Hutchings on Thursday 17 September 2009
Things aren't smelling so sweet for Beyoncé's first signature scent - the superstar singer's fragrance plans have caused upset over at Abercrombie & Fitch, and the brand is suing her.
Just days after announcing that she would create a perfume with Coty, Abercrombie & Fitch has announced that it is taking pre-emptive legal action against the singer, claiming infringement.
But the real catch is – it's suing over a name that doesn't yet exist. While Beyoncé revealed plans for the perfume this week, no confirmation of a name was made.
However, the US high street giant is claiming that the singer has filed an intent-to-use trademark application for her on-screen persona, Sasha Fierce.
A&F has been selling a Fierce fragrance since 2003, and argues that should Mrs Jay-Z attempt to use Sasha Fierce in the name of her scent, it would 'pose a likelihood of confusion' for buyers.
While Beyoncé has fronted fragrance campaigsn for both Tommy Hilfifer and Armani, this is her first foray into creating an eponymous scent.
Speaking to WWD earlier this week she raved: 'For me, fragrance reflects a woman's attitude and unique sense of style. While I love various perfumes, I haven't found a scent that truly personifies me as a woman. Working with Coty, I was able to turn my ideal fragrance into a reality by creating an alluring and sophisticated fragrance; one that’s reflective of my inner power.'
We wonder if she's feeling quite so positive about the venture now!

I honestly can't believe the depths to which corporation suing has sunk.
Do they truely think that consumers will be baffled or confused as to what scent they are buying if Beyonce goes with 'Sasha Fierce'?
Both products will be/have been backed with industry-standard ad campaigns, not to mention having completely unique packaging based on A&C and Beyonce's unique tastes. There is no way a man or woman will be confused over which one they are spending their hard-earned cash on!
A&C need to sort themselves out and quit being so pathetic. It seems to me they are more worried about Beyonce trounching them in the profit stakes and, as a result, are chasing this law suit just to make money. Crikey, is this the professional way to carry on? I suggest A&C carry out an overhaul of their business if they wish to be more successful, and stop whinging over healthy competition. How can that be good PR?
Beyonce should carry on with her plans and decide on her own course of action. If her perfume is any good, we'll buy it anyway.
