Women ignore credit crunch

Marie Claire Issues and Campaigns: Woman putting on make-up Rex Features

Women are choosing to cut back on their food costs, to pay for cosmetics and beauty products as the credit crunch settles in, new research reveals.

Nearly one in three women – the equivalent to eight million – would prefer to eat less than curtail their spending on what we all deem essential beauty items.

Three-quarters of women also consider make-up and body treatments 'everyday essentials' as opposed to luxury items.

The survey of 1,000 women conducted by beauty shopping website, feelunique.com proved that the credit crunch is yet to hit the bathrooms and make-up bags of most women. Our devotion to looking good has generated a ever-increasing industry worth £12 billion a year.

The average spends £11.53 per week on cosmetics, which adds up to a whopping £33,575 over a lifetime.

Siobhan McDermott, head buyer at feelunique.com claimed the industry was growing despite the credit crunch.
