Peptides: what are they and why do we need them?

They're not just amazing, they're essential

How often do you look at the back of your beauty products and check the ingredients list? Never? You should. This is where the key to your flawless complexion lies. And one of the most important beauty ingredients to look out for is peptides.

Why? Because they’re the miracle workers behind cell-communication. So if you want to tell your skin to repair itself, you’ll need to peptides. If you want to tell your skin to produce more collagen, you’ll need peptides. And if you want your skin to maintain more moisture, yep, you guessed it, you’ll need peptides.
In fact, the latest research is examining how different types of synthesized peptides can enter the living membrane of cells and, more interestingly, transport biologically active ingredients to these cells without them breaking down en route. Pretty clever for a beauty ingredient.
We sat down with Dr Murad, board certified dermatologist and founder of Murad skincare, to learn all about what peptides are, what they do and why we need them.

What is a peptide?
A peptide is made up of amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins, which is an essential building block of bones, muscles, cartilage, skin, and blood.
What do peptides do?
These amino acids act as a messenger between the dermis (deeper layers)  and epidermis (upper layers) of the skin. Depending on what you are looking to achieve within the skin will depend on the type of peptide you need to use.
Why do we need peptides?
Peptides help you to be prescriptive with your products. For example, in the hydration boosting Murad Hydro-Dynamic Quenching Essence, we have a patented Collagen Support Complex which contains a hydrating peptide called Oligopeptide-1 to plump fine lines and maintain hydration.
Why do we need peptides?
Peptides are so important because they are how we communicate with the skin.
