Four living presidents offer advice over lunch with Barack Obama
Just to remind Barack Obama of the footsteps he must follow, the President-Elect met for lunch with all four living US presidents, ahead of Obama’s inauguration later this month.
In his own words the soon-to-be-President admitted he was a little overwhelmed by the get together, describing it as an ‘extraordinary gathering’.
In attendance were George W.Bush, his father George H W Bush, Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter.
Well-wishes were the order of the day with President Bush welcoming Obama with open arms. ‘One message that I have and I think we all share is that we want you to succeed,’ he said. ‘We wish you all the very best, and so does the country.’
Posing for the cameras, the world’s most exclusive club stood shoulder to shoulder in a photocall at the Oval Office.
Obama thanked Mr Bush for his words and said he saw the gathering as a great opportunity to ‘get advice, good counsel and fellowship from these individuals’ and learn ‘from their successes’ before he takes office on 20 January.
However, we’ll never know what the five really discussed over the White House lunch.
‘All of us would love to be flies on the wall and listening to that conversation,’ said the White House press secretary Dana Perino – revealing what every journalist and presidential historian around the world was thinking.
