And Apple gets a 10/10

Words by Simon Osbourne-Walker

The new iPhone 8 and bigger iPhone 8 Plus have been unveiled by Apple, showcasing a new glass-backed design, faster performance and wireless charging. Battery life isn't getting a boost, sadly, so don't tuck your portable power pack in a drawer just yet.

But it was a 10th-anniversary model, the iPhone X, that really stole the show. That's X as in the Roman numeral, so to be said as “iPhone 10”. Thanks for confusing things, Apple.

Like the new iPhone 8, the iPhone X has glass on the front and back, and it's water-resistant. It only comes in black or silver, though – no gold version like there is with the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus.

Where the iPhone X differs from Apple's cheaper handsets is with a 5.8-inch OLED screen that takes up pretty much the whole body, with no Home button. So you get a larger screen without the handset needing to be any bigger. The OLED tech means it'll be brighter and more colourful than any previous iPhone display, too.

The iPhone X is also packing the most advanced selfie camera yet. It not only lets you securely unlock your phone using your face (don’t worry – it works in the dark too), but it also lets you take Portrait photos. This means you can apply the same great background-blur effects the rear camera provides to your selfie shots.

The iPhone X supports the same wireless charging tech as the iPhone 8 – so you can just sit it on the Apple AirPower charging pad, without plugging it in. It also, though, comes with fast-charging. That means you get 50% of the iPhone X battery life back from a quick 30-minute charge – very useful if you’re in a hurry.

And how much is this new shiny thing going to cost? Prices start at £999. Yes, start. That's for the version with 64GB of storage, while the 256GB model is an eye-watering £1149. We're going to be keeping a very close eye on Trusted Reviews' best Black Friday deals for tech...

In any case, it'll be a steep price for a handy gadget.

Just ouch. Got a kidney to sell?
