Amber Heard's very cool, very un-Cannes look got us thinking about her recent style transformation...

Amber Heard has always looked amazing on the red carpet. (With genes like that, how could you not?) But over the past year or so, we've started to notice a subtle change in her style. And we'd like to proffer a guess at what may be influencing her...

After seeing the 28-year-old actress on the red carpet at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday night, we did a bit of a double-take. Her Vionnet dress looks like a slouchy white tee haphazardly tucked into a metallic skirt. And the side plait in her tousled waves, while beautiful, could easily pass for festival hair.

Don't get us wrong, we love the look. But this is Cannes. The most glamorous red carpet in the history of ever. And if there's anyone who can do Old Hollywood glam like a pro, it's Amber Heard. So we were a bit surprised by her laid-back look.

But the more we thought it about, the more we loved it. She looks effortlessly cool and relaxed and not the least bit overdone - a look that Johnny Depp always pulls off with ease.

So has Amber been taking style tips from her fashionable fiance?

In the pre-Depp era (a.k.a. before they started dating in 2012), Amber was known for her ultra-glam, va-va-voom red-carpet style. Glitz and glimmer were key elements in her gowns, and she knew how to flaunt her figure with a sexy silhouette. But these days she seems to prefer edgier, grittier and just plain cooler garb.

Of course, we've seen it before. We watched Jennifer Aniston morph into a Brooklyn hipster after linking up with Justin Theroux. We've witnessed David and Victoria Beckham's gradual transition into one beautifully tailored and perfectly coordinated entity over the years. Ryan Reynolds readily admits that wife Blake Lively serves as his stylist. And we saw Kanye West give Kim Kardashian a complete wardrobe overhaul.

We'll just go ahead and take Amber's brilliant new look as a sign that she and Johnny are heading for a happy and well-dressed marriage...
