Down-to-earth British darling Keira Knightley has hinted her relationship with actor Rupert Friend may be on the rocks.

The notoriously private star made the shocking revelation in an interview about her upcoming role in a West End production of the The Misanthrope.

When talking about the play, the actress made a clear comparison between herself and her saucy new stage role as a flirtatious Hollywood film star.

She said: 'Do I recognise being an extremely well-known young actress? Yes.'

'And she's in the middle of a world full of people who are quite a bit older than her', she continued.

Then turning attention to a comparison between their love lives she revealed: 'She's having a problem with her boyfriend. No comment.'

This marks a big change for the usually reserved star, who has been with Rupert since they met on the set of Pride & Prejudice in 2002.

In the past she has spoken out about her wishes to keep her private life out of the spotlight, at one point even threatening to quit Hollywood altogether if the press intrusion continued.
