Sweet tomatoes hit shops
By Lucy Halfhead on Tuesday 24 November 2009
A new hybrid tomato, named the 'Sugardrop', went on sale at Tesco today, in a bid to woo shoppers who find ordinary tomatoes too sharp to eat.
The Sugardrop is described as being as 'sweet as a peach', and is being targeted at those with a sweet tooth.
It is a hybrid of two tomato varieties - both of which are being kept a closely guarded secret in the competitive world of tomato growers. According to The Telegraph, its development follows two years of trials that involved a staggering 3,000 different tomato types.
Ashleigh McWilliams, Tesco tomato buyer, told the Telegraph: 'A few years ago we sat down with our suppliers and asked them to find us a high quality tomato that would appeal to gourmets with a sweet tooth.
'It was the beginning of major research that involved our growers contacting all the major seed houses in the world in order to find varieties that they could cross pollinate to find a tomato with higher than normal sugar levels.
'The result is the Sugardrop which is the sweetest tomato there has ever been and now this week UK shoppers will be the first to try it.'
