Shock style news: Luella Bartley ceases trading

By Lucy Hutchings  on Wednesday 11 November 2009

Luella Bartley, news, Marie Claire

Despite her status as one of the British fashion industry's best-loved stylistas, Luella Bartley has announced that her eponymous label has ceased trading.

The label's key financier, Club 21, pulled its investment, confirming in a statement that it had made the decision, 'not to invest further in its relationship with Luella Bartley Limited.'

The future of the fashion label is now left in jeopardy - Club 21 held the licence to distribute both Luella's accessories and clothing globally.  It also means it is unlikely that Bartley's spring/summer '10 collection will ever see stores.

Bartley commented via a statement, 'This is a very disappointing situation for everyone involved with the brand. I very much appreciate the support that (Club 21) has given me, but it is upsetting not to be able to protect jobs in this difficult economic climate.'

She addded, 'I love the Luella character and hope that after we have survived this challenging time the Luella girl can have an exciting future ahead of her, whichever incarnation she takes on next. We have a number of options open to us, and are considering these over the coming months.'

sorry to see this loss of jobs..but to be fair to the backers, the clothing is either a love it or hate it thing and I don't think Luella has international status - despite the banging on of a few models who support her as they are friends. I bought a Luella top, the material was scratchy and the cut was off so it didn't fall right when I wore it. I have never been tempted to try anything else of hers. I think for what it is, it's over rated. Better to back good Brit designers with well made pieces, perhaps creating more demand and therefore more jobs. P.S. Does anyone know, have the fabulous FrostFrench gone the same way..their pieces were simple but well made and worth the money...same as 28twelve, ienna's label with her sister...lets support those we have left.
