Chris Brown: Rihanna assault should remain 'between us'

By Megan Conner  on Monday 9 November 2009

Chris Brown in court in LA

Chris Brown has called for ex-girlfriend Rihanna to keep schtum about the details of the assault she suffered at his hands nine months ago in a shocking new statement released via MTV.

The R&B singer told the news channel: 'While I respect Rihanna's right to discuss the specific events of February 8, I maintain my position that all of the details should remain a private matter between us.'

His appeal comes after Rihanna gave an interview to ABC's Diane Sawyer, during which she confirmed police reports describing how Brown put her in a headlock and punched her several times in the face.

She also nodded upon hearing allegations that the 20-year-old bit her on the ear and fingers following an argument over a text message he received from another woman.

She told Sawyer: 'He had no soul in his eyes. Just blank. He was clearly blacked-out. There was no person when I looked at him. It was almost as if he had nothing to lose.'

But the star still wished her ex well in the interview: 'Love doesn't go away right away,' she said. 'I don't hate him at all. I actually love and care about him. I want him to do well, have a great career, have a great life and grow up.'

Brown told MTV: 'I do appreciate her support and wish her the best, I am extremely sorry for what I did, and I accept accountability for my actions. Abuse of any kind is wrong. The rest I leave to God.'

Does Brown have a right to ask Rihanna to keep quiet? Post your comments below.

This is domestic abuse and is not a private matter but a very public concern for everyone and the fact that Chris Brown is requesting Rihanna's silence does not help in the battle to encourge victims of domestic abuse to step forward and report crimes against them without feeling they are in some way to blame.

wow. this is another example of how the media turns what people say into a FALSE STATEMENT. he never asked her to keep quiet about the situation, all he said was what he thought it should e. which mean it would be kept a private matter on his part not hers. gosh ya'll are so ignorant. SMH

I feel that he should have that right. Like he siad it happened so long ago and, she is tryin to keep it going. i seems to me that she like people being around her and, that she really wants his fans to hate him. but i feel with everthing thing that happend to her was good she go twhat was coming to her!

I was a victim of a violent attack by two of my male relatives, I had a fractured eye socket, broken cheekbones, broken nose, dislocated jaw. I think Rihanna has to keep on talking about what happened to her for our sakes, all the victims like me that don't have a voice. I couldn't even get my attackers to court!

Jessica - nobody deserves to be abused.

You are evidently not the sharpest tool in the box but a word of advice - domestic abuse is a criminal offence for a reason.

Hope you get an education soon.

Jessica, I think you are incorrect in your statement that Rihanna deserved it. I will say that abuse of any kind is not justified...HOWEVER, I think many people want Chris Brown to be the "bad guy." He made a terrible mistake, but he has learned from it and so should the public. Rihanna also needs to learn from the mistakes she has made. Remember she said "we were violent for each other". That must mean that she played a role in some type of abuse (most likely verbal). Again, I do NOT agree with men abuse women, but if you confront a man and behave like a man, how can you expect him to treat you like a woman? Think how would you feel if someone approached you in a violent manner & how you would react BEFORE you do that you someone else.
