Cheryl Cole denies her song is Kelis rip-off

Cheryl Cole - Celebrity News - Marie Claire Rex Features

Cheryl Cole wowed the crowd last weekend when she debuted her new single, Fight For This Love, on X Factor

A staggering 14.8 million viewers tuned in to see her perform, exceeding viewing figures of even last year's final.

Wracked with nerves, Cheryl pulled out all the stops for the show, donning a dramatic outfit and being supported by a large team of dancers.

Her single's been flying off the shelves, and she seemed on her way to securing the top spot in the charts this weekend, which will knock off protégé Alexandra Burke.

But now music fans have raised doubts about the originality of the track.

It seems that some have found Fight For This Love - written by Andre Merritt who has previous worked with Rihanna - similar to a hit song by rapper Kelis.

Lil Star, released in 2007 reached number three in the charts.

However, Cheryl's camp has vigorously denied allegations. A spokesman for the star yesterday hit back at claims, saying, 'There are no similarities.'

What do you think? Are two the tracks similar? Let us know in the comments box below.

there are NOT similar, we heard Cheryl song in September why now this accusation because it is simple Cheryl is doing well.. I would say just back off leave Cheryl alone...
Comment by laura on October 22 10:46

How ridiculous. They sound NOTHING alike! It's clearly just people jumping on the 'we hate Cheryl Cole' band wagon. Give the girl a break!
Comment by Sarah on October 22 11:37

It sounds more like Kci&JoJo - All My Life rather than Kelis. But still LOVE cheryl! x
Comment by Sally on October 22 12:01

I don't think they sound that similar... poor Cheryl, she's had so much to deal with in the last few weeks and now this! I hope her song gets to number 1
Comment by Steph on October 22 14:59

They dont sound anything alike at all. Its probs Kelis fans hear one tiny similarity that no one else hears and they say she copied it, but they're just annoyed cheryls gonna go higher in the charts then what kelis did.
Comment by kirsty on October 22 15:04

As she raise up, she will have more enemies, jealous and envy people around. She is great, good example and great Briton to be proud of since are not so many.
Comment by sandra arce on October 22 15:05

Oh my God!! Both songs are COMPLETELY different!! She's doing so well and unfortunately not everyone wants her to, give the girl a break!!!
Comment by Tess on October 22 15:25

when going to leave the lass alone, all talk she not singing live ect, saying this backed fired onthe press, instead x,factor got bout 3million ex viewers, far the song goes you dont have to fight for the no1 top spot in the charts odds on to go there, brill tune, well done chez.
Comment by peter on October 22 15:42

Big fan of Cheryl she is a great talent, but i can hear a distinct similarity there. I wouldn't say its blatant, infact its very subtle but they are very similar.
Comment by Steven on October 22 15:44

Actually, I can hear a very subtle similarity in the verses. But saying that, a lot of pop songs are ripped off these days so I don't think that Cheryl's new song is an exception.
Comment by Lisa on October 22 16:00

What?! I thought it'd be a song by Kelis I haven't heard of but Lil Star?! I'm not a big Cheryl Cole fan and I really don't like Fight For This Love, but it and Lil Star are nothing alike!
Comment by Fiona on October 22 16:01

To me, they sound nothing alike. i mean come on, seriously, as if kelis was the first person to have verses sound like that! Britney had had verses like that, so has everyone! in my opinion, the songs are just songs and nothing alike.
Comment by Lydia on October 22 16:05

blatenly not alike at all , if even if they was who'd complain its cheryl cole ! .. think people are just jelous of her being this good they wanna bring her donw , not gunna work :)
Comment by Katie on October 22 16:16

oh poor cheryl, yes, she has sooo much to worry about. she has to worry when the bills hit her door like every other person potentially facing redundancy.

her poor husband decided to get his leg over, and she found out. boohoo..yet shes still with him, so much for girl power!!

oh no, thats right, financially, which is the main reason people get stressed/nervous..her supposed nerves 'issue' is really making her a fortune.

now in regard the song, nope nothing alike.
Comment by Sarah on October 22 16:29

They sound REALLY similar. Who ever says it doesn't... obviously isn't listening to the song. But, lets face it. Cheryl's song is far better.
Comment by Edd on October 22 16:30

they dnt sound similar at all just coz cherlys doing well tell ya what i hope she goes number one she deserves it well i think she does she will go far in her solo career n i reckon her song is well good GO CHERYL COLE
Comment by sammy on October 22 16:44

A couple of parts of the song do sound similar, though obviously with completely different lyrics and stuff... but out of the millions of songs in the world, is it even possible to be totally original tune-wise anymore?
Comment by Lauren on October 22 16:54

I like cheryl and kelis so I wouldnt criticise either, when I listened to the two songs back to back the beat is the same but the words are completely different. Its just the beat of the drums which sounds the same. However may I add although I am a fan of cheryl and girls aloud I am not completely sold on this song.
Comment by Craig on October 22 16:55

Wouldn't suprise me, I thought it was awful, and most of the Hip-Pop garbage Kelis churned out when she was flavour of the month was awful too.
It's the danger of generic Pop/R&B, sooner or later even the slowest witted chart hugger will realise the song they've just heard about how 'I ain't gonna take this from yo no mo, I'm and independant woman' was pretty much identical to the last song about how 'I ain't gonna take this from yo no mo, I'm an independant woman' that they heard 5 minutes ago.
Comment by Christofurr on October 22 17:04

cheryl cole is the best singer i reckon nd the songs are no way similar lyk. leave chezza alone she's a fantastic singer nd wouldn't copy off any1!!!!!!!!!
Comment by propa brill on October 22 17:05

TBH i don't like cheryl that much danni minogue is soooo way prettier than her and FIGHT FOR THIS LOVE isn't that good... i perfer bad boys and kelis rocks =] My opinion x x
Comment by Mim on October 22 17:13

i can literally hear nothin similar bout both of them...so people need to get lives, they try to make the smallest things big. trying to make a story outta nothin....seriously cheryls done well and i dnt know y people r trying to put her down with rubbish like this.
Comment by charlline on October 22 17:13

I don't think they sound alike...
Comment by Megan on October 22 17:29

I feel so sorry for Cheryl.. she's been so stressed over along period of time and they are just trying to make her feel worse. The 2 songs don't even sound alike mun!
Comment by Bethan on October 22 17:38

They sound NOTHING alike! Those critics aren't just being critical, they've run out of things to say so are just making stuff up!
Comment by Saskia on October 22 17:40

Okay it blates they sound the same at the beginning, all thoughs who say it doesnt sound at all the same well im sorry it does... you can't deny it. Want me to prove it? Both songs start with the chord Am to D.
But I must cut a little slack their chorus' are different.
Comment by Matufa on October 22 17:42

I am not a fan or even that bothered about Cheryl Coles song and even I can see they are nothing like. Some people spend too much time looking for a target to cause trouble for.
Comment by Matthew on October 22 18:08

I can see why they say that but i think it is a coincidence tbh. The lyrics are different, the music is quite different and the singers are different so it isnt the same. whoever thinks its a rip off.... get over it! people like it
Comment by Lozz on October 22 18:14

it might not sound the same, but cheryl cole is starting to become something that she was never before, i also think she has the talent for survival.
i think fame sooner or later does get to you, poor cherly cole just another brick in the wall.
Comment by xxxx on October 22 18:27

I Can Hear A Slight Simalarity But As If They Knew, There Are So Many Songs Out There, One Or Two Are Bound To End Up Sounding Alike !
Comment by Raeee on October 22 18:30

They sound nothing alike, cheryl's song is far better, she is having a hard time at the moment and people shuld back off her and give her a chance! Oh and she looked ace sat night
Comment by Nat on October 22 18:32

Absolutly Nothing Alike :S, Either way Cheryls Is Better :) Lol. X
Comment by Lauren on October 22 18:32

The music and rhythm to both tracks do sound very similar when you listen to them and not the lyrics to the songs. Techinically speaking however they are two very different songs within their seperate genres and therefore cannot be likened to each other.
Comment by Dave on October 22 18:34

she sucks anyway
Comment by jack on October 22 18:37

its just the beat similiar most singer sing with similiar beat, leave cheryl alone
Comment by tash on October 22 18:41

who cares about ripping KELIS off....what i want to know is WHY DID SHE RIP OFF ADAM ANTS IMAGE?!!!!
Comment by Fubar on October 22 18:47

i think she sang it well and i think these people are just jealous of how well cheryls sang it
Comment by samantha on October 22 18:47

I think the song sounds more like thats just the way it is by bruce hornsby

Comment by dado on October 22 18:48

Anyone with a reasonably good musical ear can tell that they've used a similar classic chord sequence in each song but that type of thing happens all the time! There are only so many chord sequences that are pleasing to listen to. What also makes these songs sound a little similar is the fact that the tempos are almost the same but, again, think about how often that happens between songs. It still does NOT make Cheryl's song a rip-off of Kelis'. I'm almost sure I remember reading somewhere that plagurism in songs only exists if the actual melodies are the same. It would be impossible to avoid identical chord sequences and tempos are there are only so many. In fact, I'm sure I read that there needs to be at least 7 identical consecutive notes in the melody to warrant plagurism and I've had a quick listen to each song there on Utube and don't think this has happened anywhere in Cheryl's song. So, in my opinion, she's done nothing illegal or even immoral so people should give the girl a break on this one. I wouldn't consider myself a fan of the hers but, let's face it, it took some guts to get up on Sunday night (on the X-factor of all shows!) and debut her first solo single. She did really well and, I have to say, her song is fantastic. Well done, Cheryl love, and congratulations you brave woman! XO
Comment by Budgie Bee on October 22 18:56

i think that they are similar, i said that to my mum that they were similar before her x factor performance and i still believe that they are similar.
Comment by sophie on October 22 18:56

There is a similarity, though not exactly the same. I think it was by coincidence though because they always happens!
Comment by Sunny on October 22 18:58

hmm i can see how they kinda sound the same, too many "cheryl" fans commenting lol! dont think of the artist, just listen to the music and rhythem and the way its sung...they are pretty similar....well even if you think cheryl aint copyin..this song is gonna be the one that "sounds like that kelis song". they both sound nice to be fair.
Comment by vips on October 22 19:04

They blatantly sound similar! same chord progression! But alot of songs sound similar to others. i dont think there is any plagiarism here and yes people need to stop hating on cheryl shes talented and she's fly anybody who would hate on her obviously has neither of those qualities. Cheryl kkep doin your thing. BIG CHOON
Comment by Big D on October 22 19:23

cheryl CANNNOT sing shes CRAP and furthermore everybody tuned in to see the one and only legend whitney houston not the screaming cat
Comment by whitney houston fan on October 22 19:25

Why can't people just leave poor Cheryl alone? Her song's amazing and does not sound like Kelis' song at all!
Comment by Obidi on October 22 19:28

this is pathetic, theyre 2 years apart maybe a tiny bit similar but nevertheless there are many song you could find similar, if people like it so much then why is everyone getting in stress about it, they both got there money and theyre both in the end totally different.
Comment by Megan on October 22 19:34

I don't find them similar at all, although my mum when she heard it said she liked it as it reminded her of Lil Star!
Comment by amy on October 22 19:40

i think it sounds more a lionel ritchie song!!!
Comment by heather on October 22 19:45

i think they sound nothing alike! As a street dancer, I am currently doing a routine to fight for this love which is a fast routine, we couldnt do the same routine to 'lil star' as needs to be slower. I think they dont sound anything alike.
Comment by jasmine on October 22 20:01

they aren't anything alike at all, the only similarity is the fact they both say to keep trying for something. Completly different lyrics and tune. to be honest i think there just jelous of cheryl, give her a break.
Comment by Holly on October 22 20:16

the backing music is kind of the same but thats about it.
Comment by cailee on October 22 20:33

i love cheryl cole. she sounds nothing like kelis, kelis isnt a good singer so its defo not the same. cheryl is an inspiration to all. we hear more of cheryl than we ever did kelis! cheryl all the way! TEAM COLE!
Comment by Rebecca on October 22 20:37

They're exactly the same. Who cares anyway, people are still going to be stupid enough to buy music based on a personality. a fake personality at that
Comment by Tom on October 22 20:44

They dont sound anythinn like x Leave cheryl alone its the stupid news papers aree just goinn to do it for show andd money
Comment by Chloe on October 22 20:48

ohhh please... which ever person listened to both tracks, clearly had ear plugs in and had the prodigy playing at the same time. They are so different
Comment by Diane on October 22 20:51

Not even a slight likeness between the two songs, it's just Kelis getting jealous that Cheryl is 10x hotter, smarter and more talented than she ever was.
Comment by Joey on October 22 20:51

The songs are nuthing alike aha people are just jelous , hope cheryl gets to number 1 :)x
Comment by Marie on October 22 21:17

who ever said these two songs sound the same must of borrowed MR spocks ears
Comment by matt on October 22 21:21

i think it might be a rip off because when i played both songs together on youtube the rhythm and the beat and melody is basically the same.
You people should try it if you play the songs in different tabs and then get them to play together so the beats basically become one and you can hear why people would think its a rip off of Kelis - Lil Star
Comment by Shaquilla on October 22 21:40

Cheryl is a FAKE!!! Can't sing, Can't talk, and Dumb as well (just see her comments on X Factor)
Comment by Journo on October 22 21:44

what are people on thinking that cheryl coles song 'fight for this love' is simular to 'lil star' kelis? there are no simularites at all. Why do people not just leave cheryl cole alone? shes went through hard times and does not deserve this shes such a nice person and is always caring about people. Anyways 'fight for this love' is well better than 'lil star' anyways. Love ya cheryl xx
Comment by megansmith. on October 22 21:47

they sound nothing alike. cheryls is atop song much better than anything kelis has done or evr will do
Comment by sofi on October 22 21:54

I don't think they are alike but with all the songs that have been written there are bound to be similarities. Cheryl is doing a good job and we should be proud that she is British. Good luck Cheryl and hope you reach No. 1 and stay there for several weeks.
Comment by Pam on October 22 21:56

Listen to lyrics and you will hear it say everything she wanted to say to her husband. with all the troble they have been through. Which is why she sang it from her heart. Alike or no alike it tells more about her
Comment by FTK on October 22 21:57

theres no point listening to to kelis song now and comparing cus if u thought they did, the 1st time u heard cheryls song u would have thought it sounded like it straight away and it dont at all kmt
Comment by Tanizzle Rizzle on October 22 22:08

Kelis fans didn't start this, Cheryl fans did.
They do sound alike, however Kelis one is much better and much more original. Cheryl is not very talented and its good to see that artists are now getting exposed for copying Kelis' sound. She doesn't get the props she deserve.
Comment by bluebell on October 22 22:44

i was just listening to lil star and i can see what people are saying but its hardly recognisable unless u listen really closely
Comment by Marge on October 22 22:46

My brother pointed it out the first time he heard Cheryl's track...........and I have to agree they are very similar. Probably not intentional but still.........
Comment by Betty on October 22 23:44

I'm pretty sure that 14.8 million people did not tune in to particularly see Cheryl's useless, tedious performance. She simply cannot sing, cannot dance and was dressed like a tramp at the X Factor performance and even had the guts to previously have a go at Kandy Rain for dressing like prostitutes a week before. She is full of crap accuses and when anything goes wrong she pleads for pity. I don't know why anyone feels sorry for her as she is making tons of money through the X Factor and properly knows what the papers are like by now lol but anyway as for the song, well I don't listen to crap music so therefore I wouldn't know haha lolz
Comment by Shane on October 23 00:26

please leave cheryl alone ,why are people so judge mental ,cheryl is a fantastic indivitual an role model to alot of people ,cheryl deseves the best in life and she has a fantastic voice and personality and cares for peoples feelings ,she derserves the best and deserves where she as got 2day ,i cant wait to get hert new album .ive heard te songs and they r amazing ,true words from the heart god bless cheryl always xxxx
Comment by erica on October 23 02:57

Typical British attitude nice girl done good what can we find nasty to say about her.
Comment by Stewart on October 23 08:40

no way they are so diffrent every1 is jst jealous y carnt people just let things b every1 has 2 but in owt 2 put any1 down.......U go cherly love ya xxxx
Comment by jodie on October 23 09:32

they don't sound anything alike! I think people just need to give her a break for once, there's always people going on at her for stupid things.I love the song and hope it goes to No.1, she deserves it.
Comment by alex on October 23 09:52

it DOES sound like the Kelis track (the beat, not the lyrics) and anyone who says it doesn't knows very little about music.
Comment by Itsme on October 23 10:00

Thats aload of rubbish its nothing like it... i think Cheryl's song is great however i thought that lil star song was nothing special at all... people just cant stand to see someone doing so well they cant just be like wow great song and be happy for her...sad people!!!
Comment by Kate on October 23 10:10

Uhh, they sound very similar in verse melodies - add a more intense vocal and bigger beats.

Who really minds that much anyway, Fight for this Love is such a rubbish but annoyingly catchy song.

Noone would like it in the slightest if Cheryl Cole hadn't sung it.
Comment by tish on October 23 10:10

Actually I have to say I hadnt heard the Cheryl Cole song until Tuesday when I was in the car with my husband and I didnt know who it was and I asked him if it was Kelis... and Im not a fan of her either... so I can see where the doubts of its originality come from.
Comment by Lynn on October 23 10:42

I am glad that she is knocking alexandra burke off the top, because I couldn't stand or even sit watching her on Xfactor and she sickened me with the first record that she released, good luck to you Cheryl,
Comment by Tony Blackburne on October 23 10:56

A lot of the songs nowadays sound similar, but cheryl's song and performance out shown Witney Houston
Comment by amelia on October 23 11:05

they are not the same at all. critics jst want to try and find a way to make cheryl look bad cauz they cant accept thats she is good at what she does.
Comment by N on October 23 11:09

Cheryl was gr8..... I luv her and she is a hero where i live in newcastle... Leave her alone. The songs sound nothing alike and they r just jumping onto the "we hate cheryl cole" band wagon. So back off!!! :D
Comment by Catherine on October 23 11:12

I think it does resemble. I noticed it the first time I heard it that it seemed familiar. It's a very smart rip off, as it seems she took the under-beat, instead of the top beat. Maybe she didn't realize it, but the same background tune is there.
Comment by Dionisia on October 23 11:22

Cheryl is amazing i think people are forgetting that she is only 26 i dont no if the songs sound alike or not but who cares how many other songs sound the same give her a break.
Comment by Janet on October 23 11:55

I can see the similarity in the actual make up of the song, the beat and the rhythm, obviously Cole's is more up tempo but there is definatley something there. Having said that I dont think anyone can honestly say that it's be 'stolen'...
Comment by Mike on October 23 11:58

o wow, some parts do sound similar.
But I don't believe it's a rip, I refuse to believe it.
Love Cheryl.
Comment by Samuel on October 23 12:08

What the hell are you all talking about poor cheryl she has anything and everything money can buy do you really think its going to make that much of a differance to the past??. people have that past and dont have money to buy everything they wish at the end of the day your the fools for feeling sorry, feel sorry for yourselfs for falling into a fantasy
Comment by girl on October 23 12:09

I don't think that they sound at all similar. No similarity in beat, melody or lyrics. Whoever thought they had a shot at making that accusation stick is delusional.
Comment by Frank on October 23 12:09

Probably not a rip off, but when I heard the song, I thought, "This sounds a bit like something else I've heard", and when I checked the Kelis one, they don't MATCH, but no-one can claim they sound NOTHING alike. Thing is, its a typical pop progression, so there's no rip-off there. Songs of similar styles are going to sound...similar...
Comment by Domanic on October 23 12:15

I can see the similarity, when I listened to the Kelis song I was expecting the Cheryl chorus. Its not the same song, everything is influenced by something else. That's how all art is created. No one can live in a cave and make great art withoiut absorbing the world in sights and sounds around them. You suck it all in, then it becomes your own when you mix it up and let it back out. Of course some art will be similar to other art, but that doesn't stop it being good in its own right.
Comment by purpleM on October 23 12:16

The beats are very similar, but that's as far as the similarity goes.
Comment by Steve on October 23 12:31

It is actually more of a cover version of the Lionel Ritchie song "You Are My Destiny" - try listening to it and see what you think. The chords at the start are the same.
Comment by Jane on October 23 12:43

nothing a like at all. its like saying alexandra burkes bad boy song is the same as paramore's ignorance. there completley different!
Comment by charlotte on October 23 12:54

OH MY GOSH, THATS PATHETIC!! IT DOESN'T SOUND ANYTHING LIKE IT. WHY WOULD CHERYL COPY A SONG WHEN AND DENY IT WHEN SHE KNOWS THAT THE PUBLIC WOULD RECOGNISE IT. JEEZ PEOPLE THESE DAYS ARE PATHETIC TO BE HONEST. THE PUBLIC SHOULD BE SUPPORTING HER!! SICK TO BE REAL HONEST. I HATE CRITICISM
Comment by PATHETIC on October 23 13:26

There is a definite similarity but that's what happens when one producer works with different artists. you can tell a timbaland or will.i.am produced track a mile off! It sounds more like k-ci and jojo's all my life to me, but the song is dire anyway. She should stick to being a jobby chav and assaulting toilet attendents. A bunch of fake hair, fake teeth and a stylist moving into your pad does not a sucessful artist maketh, love.
Comment by lucie on October 23 14:09

Have the whole "music" loving population lost it. This is a synical marketing based media circus with very little to do with talent or quality. Good looking dancers and fancy costumes dont equate to real talent.

PS, the 14.8 million viewers did not, I repeat did not tune in to watch cheryl cole
Comment by scotty on October 23 14:40

They sound nothing like each other.. and even if they were slightly similar, who cares. Cheryl is a much bigger star than Kelis & how many other songs sound the same as each other, loads?!
Comment by Matt Skinner on October 23 14:56

Personally, i dont think they sound anything the same :S
Comment by Xx..36..xX on October 23 15:46

they sound almost identical! cheryls a total rip off....it's a terrible song anyway
Comment by BIG JOCK on October 23 15:50

They sound nothing like eachother! Who ever said it did in the first place is just silly.
Comment by Becky and Matthew on October 23 16:13

i think people need to get their hearing tested, the songs are NOTHING ALIKE!
Comment by Sema on October 23 16:22

i just listened to both songs and i must admit they do sound similar they use the same sort of tune in the verses but different chorus but really who cares the music industry does that these days i mean look at flo rida he takes a rubbish song and remixis it into another rubbish song!lol (it is true tho)its music recycling :D
Comment by leah on October 23 16:41

I can see why ppl think they are alike but its not a rip off cheryl is incredible and i cant w8 2 see her at number 1!!!!
Comment by rowan on October 23 16:51

i dont think they are similar just cause cheryl is looking dangerous.they are scared
Comment by monkey on October 23 17:01

Comment by Caitlin on October 23 17:02

Hit the nail on the head! It does sound like that along with the hook of Mary J blige Just fine. Very similar to other songs...not original at all! She just cant sing solo!
Comment by Amz on October 23 17:19

they are both crap, only similarity i can see...
Comment by Charly on October 23 17:20

i dont think they sound the same i think cheryls is better
Comment by cara cullen on October 23 17:26

I hate Cheryl Cole, can't stand her. Yes it does sound like Kelis' song. Cheryl is a copy
Comment by xox on October 23 17:50

just played both on amazon and have to admit.....they sound almost identical.

Comment by Roz on October 23 18:27

The Begining Does But Nothing Else What Do You Expect From The Same Song Writer I blame Him Noot Cheryl
Comment by Laura on October 23 19:08

The two songs sound nothing alike at all!! Besides the fact that Kelis' voice is deeper sounding than Cheryl's is. And the fact that Kelis' sounds more gospel like in parts than FFTT. But both sound totally different. FFTT is a really good song that I just cant stop listening to. And very catchy. Give the poor girl a break.
Comment by Caz on October 23 19:13

This is all just a media hype looking to give cheryl a hard time. And tbh who cares if they do sound similar (which they don't) its a great song and millions of people want to listen to it.
Comment by jessica on October 23 19:27

i think cheryls done well and had a lot of guts to face simon cowell on x factor. i do think the songs have a bit of the same beat but like everyone is saying, its going to happen, well done cheryl and well done kelis.
Comment by Chrissie on October 23 19:40

I really dont like Cheryl, it seemed like last year on x-factor she was eliminating Girls Aloud com-petition!
Comment by ILoveTwilight! on October 23 20:04

you should all leave her alone. she is already nervous enough as it is, going out on her own. they do not sound the same at all.
Comment by charlotte on October 23 20:19

Oh my! You are all tone deaf!
As SOON as i heard Cheryl's song, i thought "This sounds really familiar.." and i was right! Listen to the pre-chorus of both songs, and you'll see the similarity!
Comment by Kat on October 23 20:25

they r no way anythin lyk each other r u stupid
Comment by T.J.W on October 23 20:27

it sounds more like Just Fine by Mary J Blige, but it is quite similar to Lil Star, not enough to be slated for though.
Comment by claire on October 23 20:43

The thing is, there are only so many notes and chords and so many combinations you can make with them. Yes, the chord sequence of Cheryl's song is similar or the same as Kelis, but to be honest there are so many other songs with the same chord sequence. It really is no big deal. Cheryl's song reminds me of like, 5 other songs, but I don't care. I find it catchy and likeable. Best of luck to Cheryl.

To say that 18 million of us tuned in to hear Cheryl Cole sing is nothing short of treating us all as idiots she cant sing the song is crap and mabey just mabey those who tuned in did so to hear Witney mmmmm and as for the single flying of the shelves i think we all know that its been doctered by the record company she is not a talent

Comment by oxox on October 23 21:23

we think that Cheryl is great and fight for this love is way better that lil star so cheryl couldnt have copied it or anything. The songs wiked and it will deffo reach number onee. She been through so much and kelis fans are just jelouss lol.x
Comment by billie&charlotte on October 23 21:51

Well as a musician and song writer, I have to comment that there ARE definite similarities, just run the music side by side...., but Kelis CAN sing, hey Cheryl has been marketed to the masses very well, and good on her for doing a Jordan, but there is no comparison in talent, she doesn't have any. Of course its a rip off, lots of artists that want a number one for Christmas do this, its not really clever when you know your music. Nothing new.
Comment by Jennifer on October 23 22:01

there is absolutely no similariies, this accusation is rediculous, cheryl looks great and definately does the song justice :)and the people that are making the accusations can't face the fact that she is doing well for herself and is at the top of the charts :)
Comment by rachel on October 23 22:54

They DO have similarities. I thought this the very first time I heard Cheryl's debut song on the radio. I even mentioned it to a friend. I heard the song weeks ago before I had even heard anyone else thought the same.
Comment by Maria on October 23 23:23

professional musicans have said the melody and the beat are identical u cant argue with that
Comment by zak on October 23 23:31

they do not sound alike at all. apart from like a second at the begining but you get that all the time... kelis' song doesnt become more up tempo like cheryl and no where near as good.. i think this is just stupid to bring up!
Comment by rachel on October 23 23:59

They sound nothing alike so i dont know what they are talking about...... Give the girl a break
Comment by rosie on October 24 00:03

I don't know just what a Kelis is, or may be, but it sounds like someone is trying to get some free infamy or free advertising via Cheryl's record.
I admit I'm a classics fan, but the minute Cheryl cole aims her dimples at me via the TV screen, I'm putty

Comment by shutterbug on October 24 00:53

They don't sound alike at all. I love Cheryl's new single, it's a number 1 for sure.
Comment by Emma on October 24 00:53

YO ITS KELIS'S SONG AND Y'ALL DAMN RIGHT KNOW IT!SO DEAL WIV IT.y'ALL WHO DON'L LIKE KELIS DEAL WIV IT!
Comment by BOSSY CHIC on October 24 01:14

I'm so glad someone else thinks they sound similar too... Everytime I heard this song it reminded me of Kelis' lil star. That's not to say that I don't like Cheryl Coles new single - if anything it's far better and I don't think she copied anytihng from Andre Merritts writing, it's just a mere co-incidence.
Comment by Stephanie on October 24 08:15

They sound nothing alike, why has the media always got to pick out a negative thing about a celebrity who is doing really well. Cheryl is fantastic, considering she is normally part of a group she is great on her own as well. I hope she makes the number 1 spot this week.
Comment by Emma on October 24 08:40

The only thing is that both chorus' have the same kinda tune... Still love Cheryl.. All my love and support hun xx
Comment by Georgia on October 24 09:24

i can't believe this! THE 2 SONGS SOUND NOTHING LIKE EACHOTHER!!! kelis fans r probs jealous cause cheryl did better with it then she eva did!!
Comment by ... on October 24 09:35

Omg the two songs sounds absolutely different......people are just jealous of cheryl's success with girls aloud and are jealous of how successful her solo career is going to be that they need to try and put her down after everything she has been through she deserves a break i so can't wait to here that she has reached number 1 go on cheryl well done so proud of you and how strong you are never give up xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Comment by sarah on October 24 10:18

I am glad other people are realising she ripped this track off... as soon as I heard it I thought it sounded like Kelis Little Star track
Comment by nicola on October 24 11:07

What a lol
They sound NOTHING alike
Leave Cheryl alone
Comment by Jodie on October 24 11:58

Comment by Lloyd on October 24 12:54

um cheryl u cant SING omg and ur song is simular lol.... but whitney houston wohhooo she rocks and was amazing :D
Comment by sasha woods on October 24 13:25

she has ripped that off for sure
Comment by kaykay on October 24 13:31

Not even remotely similar - besides which there are only so many guitar chords and sequences you can play, i can hear snippets of songs in loads of other ones. so what.
Comment by sarah on October 24 13:36

the start does sound a bit similar, no denyin, but i doubt its deliberate. the rest of its completely different. tempo, pitch, register etc.
Comment by steve on October 24 13:44

I am not a fan of cherly but these two songs dont sound a like at all :S
Comment by Bex on October 24 14:00

It sounds really like it. Cheryl is clearly struggling, I wish she was more orginal, like me.
Comment by GillianS on October 24 16:13

Aye right. I can hear the similarities, but i like Cheryls song better and to be fair, it wasn't actually her who wrote it so she shouldn't take the blame. She's number one, what does that show you?
Comment by Elle on October 25 22:33

In the grand scheme of songs they sound vaguely similar, but nowhere near enough to warrant making such a fuss over. It's number one so clearly nobody cares! Well done Cheryl.
Comment by Sarah on October 26 11:01

They sound NOTHING alike!! Who on earth came up with this comparison??!! That person is obviously from Kelis P.R. and this is the only publicity they can get!!.
Comment by Lee-Anne on October 26 14:18

THEY DON'T SOUND A LIKE AT ALL KELIS SONG IS I WANT YOUR LOVE OR WHAT EVER ITS CALLED CHERYL'S IS DIFFERENT AND WELL BETTER THEN KELIS'S SONG KELIS IS JUST PROPER JEALOUS OF CHERYL BECAUSE SHE WAS IN A BAND BUT NOW SHE'S SINGING SOLO CHERYL IS DOING WELL FOR HERSELF AND I'D RATHER LISTEN TO CHERYL THEN KELIS ANY DAY I WOULD JUST LIKE TO TELL CHERYL NOT TO LISTEN TO WHO EVER IS SAYING SHE COPIED KELIS'S SONG BECAUSE THEIR WRONG AND JEALOUS
Comment by Jennie on October 27 23:57

firstly, I have no problem with Cheryl Cole whatsoever, I think she's done great for herself and did a fantastic performance on the X-Factor.
But when I heard her song for the first time I felt like I already knew it from somewhere, & it is Kelis' song that it reminds me of. Apart from this they are totally different songs and it is ridiculous how defensive and worked up people are getting over her ? There is no jealously anywhere people are just stating a suggestion that they sound similar.
Comment by Georgia on October 28 13:15

The people who say it isn't are people who obviously don't know much about music....the first vocal MELODY that Kellis sings is EXACTLY and I mean EXACTLY the same as the melody that the overrated Cheryl Cole sings. You could mix these two songs together so well, almost perfectly. This is just another example of how the music industry is becoming more and more recycled.
Comment by Michael on October 30 19:21

When I first heard it I though it sounded just like Lionel Richie's 'You are my destiny'... just had to wait awhile before I found any comments agreeing with me!... not sure if there are any on here but I put the two names into Google to see what came up.
Comment by Bee on November 02 16:57

I am a huge Cheryl fan. I saw GA front row this may. But tbh they do sound similar. She obvs didnt copy it but i can see where people are coming from x
Comment by Paige on November 02 21:03

she didnt write the song, shes just a manufactured performer not a musican!!!!
Comment by paul on November 03 20:19

We're actually studying this case at the minute as I do music law! Even though I'm not a musicologist who study music intently, the similarities are in small parts, but they're there enough to speculate.
Comment by Rose Palmer on November 04 18:41

I love Cheryl, but when I heard the song it reminded me of lil star immediately. It's unfortunate for Cheryl, and obviously unintentional, however there is no denying the two songs sound very alike.
Comment by Amanda on November 08 10:34

I am 56 years old and when i first listened to the Cheryl Cole song i could hear another song running through my head. It was bugging me for weeks what that tune was. I mentioned it to my youngest son and he said about the Kelis song from a few years ago Lil Star. If I can hear the similarity with my deaf ears, thoes who cant must be tone deaf. Incidently Cheryl Cole keeps mentioning the Kelis song on the X Factor, as in your a little star Joe. Perhaps she has the Kelis song in her head too.
Comment by Tony Waite on November 22 10:59

are all u guys deaf?!?!
the start of the 2 songs are the EXACT same.

i like cheryl but theres no denying the songs a rip off
