Record complaints for Jan Moir's Stephen Gately article

By Lucy Halfhead  on Tuesday 20 October 2009

Stephen Gately and Ronan Keating

The Press Complaints Commission has received a record 22,000 complaints about Jan Moir's article about Stephen Gately since Friday - more complaints in a single weekend than the regulator has received in total in the past five years.

Moir's article
, which was published the day before Gately's funeral in Dublin, provoked widespread outrage on the web. The original headline on the Mail Online website, ‘Why there was nothing 'natural' about Stephen Gately's death', was later amended to the print edition headline. ‘A strange, lonely and troubling death'.

Moir's article said Gately's death in Mallorca after a night out ‘strikes another blow to the happy-ever-after myth of civil partnerships'.

The PCC today stopped short of announcing an immediate investigation to see if its code of practice has been violated but said it would ‘consider' the 22,000 complaints. In this case the PCC could investigate whether Moir's article violated parts of its code that deals with intrusion into grief, accuracy, discrimination and homophobia.

Moir, who has won a British Press Award, made a statement defending her column late on Friday, saying it was not her intention to offend, blaming a ‘heavily orchestrated internet campaign' for the furore and adding that it was ‘mischievous in the extreme to suggest that my article has homophobic and bigoted undertones'.

The PCC said in a statement that the Gately complaints ‘follow widespread discussion of the subject on social networking sites - especially Twitter - and represent by far the highest number of complaints ever received about a single article in the history of the commission'.

In an unexpected twist, Stephen Fry expressed sympathy for Jan Moir, and what he called a ‘sorry and squalid little article'. He said: ‘The reason I feel sorry for her is not that she is a journalist, or that she writes for the Daily Mail, I am quite sure she can do without my pompous, patronising sympathy. I feel sorry for her because I know just what it is like to make a monumental ass of oneself and how hard it is to find the road back.'

I read the article on the Mail website before I'd even seen all the Twitter comments and felt moved to tell everyone I work with to read it too - couldn't quite believe they'd published it. I'm not at all surprised about the number of complaints.

I think she deserves all the bad press she gets. Why on earth did she feel the need to write such ridiculous nonsense... does she have no feelings? She clearly didn't think about the impact on the gately family

I've just read the article, and to be honest I think it's too early to tell whether all the complaints are justified. Sure, there's a strong reactionary tone in what's written, but I have to say I didn't detect anything necessarily homophobic. The circumstances surrounding Stephen Gateley's death ARE suspicious, it is NOT unreasonable to interpret some of the facts as sleazy, and indeed it IS hard to believe that he died from natural causes.

It's easy to jump on the bandwagon, to take the view that for example if Stephen Fry thinks she's messed up then she must have done. Maybe Jan Moir was ill-advised to be so outspoken on this occasion, but I wonder how many of the complainants have actually read the article carefully and formed their own opinion.

Jan Moir ,The Daily Mail, and its editor are all to blame for printing such tripe....
My simple response is.......Leave it on the shelf, and buy a paper that prints factual articals.....I know I will.....

I have read the article Mark! as have the rest of my family! Why are the facts sleazy? just because people like yourself and Jan Moir say they are.! The autopsy carried out on Stephen showed natural causes, why would they lie? I am sure that the results had to be legal. We are not talking about Politicians here, but of a young man loved by his parents, family and friends. Had he been heterosexual, would Jan Moir believed
it? One only has to go on holiday or watch the news On the TV to see what many people, not
necessarily young, or gay, do on holiday. Let Stephen rest in peace. As for Jan Moir and people like her who hide behind a pen. I hope you think twice before you spread such wicked gossip.

Unbelievable! To be allowed to print such drivel is beyond comprehension. She should be writing fiction articles for comics.
The daily mail will not be allowed in my workplace ever again as we believe it to be homophobic and full of nonsense!

I have just read this from Australia, I cant believe that Jan could do such a thing.
I think she is a nasty piece of work. Will never support anything she has to say or write!

Here we have a classic 'foot in mouth' or 'cart before horse'. Facts, sweetie, Facts and not an embellishment of facts. A Wrong time to take the moral high ground. This Smacks of Supreme Media Exposure to get people to buy more Newspapers. One should Never speak ill of the dead but with respect, and it appears you lack that discretionary skill; and, it beggars belief, you won a journalism award--THINK before you put pen to paper and try and keep your personal beliefs to yourself.

In reply to Pat A, I didn't say the facts ARE sleazy, but that it's not unreasonable to interpret them as sleazy. Here's a gay married couple who spend a night at a club (nothing sleazy so far), but when they go home they are joined by a gay Bulgarian student. Note: I have no problem with gay relationships and gay marriage. What Jan Moir appeared to be insinuating, at least from the way I read it, was that the Bulgarian's involvement meant that at least one of the married couple was indulging in a certain level of promiscuity. Such behaviour, if it took place, is not any worse for the fact that it would have been gay - it would also have been promiscuous if a heterosexual couple had been accompanied by a third person.

IF Jan Moir's insinuations are inaccurate then I think she can expect a hefty lawsuit. On the other hand, if she's right, then she is correct to interpret some of the facts as sleazy - don't you agree, Pat A?

Like I said, maybe she was ill-advised to be so outspoken on this occasion. I wasn't exactly an avid fan of Boyzone, but they were a great bunch of lads who made some good music.

I fully believe in freedom of speech. And Jan Moir has a right as a free thinking member of this society to express her views on anything. However I was one of the c. 22,000 people that complained about her article. I did read the article and as much as she may try to explain away her own words. Her article did read as hate filled and misguided. If she were able to at least provide some sort of evidence for her findings/thoughts then fine I may not have liked what I read but I would have accepted it with no cause for complaint. Her explanations in the so called apology just don’t wash and the majority of the public will agree with me. I have yet to speak to anyone that agreed with that article (not one person). I find it difficult to believe that an intelligent long standing, experienced journalist would write an article without realising what the article implied. It is a shame to see someone destroy their own reputation in this manner. In my opinion the article was/is distasteful. She may have been misguided but the majority of the public now see her as a bigot and not a serious journalist. I am a straight woman however I was offended by some of her assumptions and the way in which she tried poorly to link it back her findings to some sort of homosexual hedonistic lifestyle. However Jan Moir wrote it, but an editor allowed it to be published so she isn’t the only bigot working at the Daily Mail (to be fair it’s not the kind of publication I read anyway. I find most tabloid papers distasteful and verging on non fictional anyway.)
