Gwen Stefani is the victim of a shocking break-in, as a gang of burglars battered their way into her £4m London home.

The gang smashed open the front door of her home in Primrose Hill - but fortunately the singer was performing with her band in Singapore.

The burglars forced their way into a ground-floor flat in the mansion, which the No Doubt star rents to Dame Elizabeth Forgan, media executive and head of the Arts Council.

They were unable to break into the upstairs flat Gwen shares with her husband Gavin Rossdale, lead singer for Bush, and their two young sons.

However, they did manage to steal jewellery belonging to Dame Elizabeth, who was not at home when the raid happened around 11.30 on Saturday night.

'We heard a loud, crashing sound but thought it was our sons and their friends in the basement,' said a neighbour.

Although the door had been battered open, the break-in was not reported to the police until a passer-by noticed the following morning.

Gwen, 39, and Gavin, 43, live in the top floors of the mansion block, with their children Kingston, three, and Zuma, one.

Police say the gang were unable to break into their home as it was 'a very secure venue'.

The rock 'n' roll couple own the freehold on the block and their neighbours include Jamie Oliver and his family, and 007 himself, Daniel Craig.

Dame Elizabeth, 65, said she was 'coping' after the raid and was talking to her insurance company to assess the damage.
