Missing girl found alive after 18 years
By Helen Abramson on Friday 28 August 2009
A girl who has been missing for 18 years, since she was abducted at the age of 11 outside her home in Lake Tahoe, California, has been found alive.
The Times reports that last night Jaycee Lee Dugard, now a 29-year-old woman, was reunited with her family after her identity was revealed in an interview with her kidnapper’s parole officer.
On June 10 1991, blonde, blue-eyed Jaycee disappeared after a man and a woman dragged her kicking and screaming into a grey car as the girl waited at a bus stop on her way to school.
Her stepfather, Carl Probyn, witnessed the event, and until now was a suspect in the highly publicised investigation. The case put great strain on his relationship with Terry Probyn, Jaycee’s mother, and they eventually separated.
Suspected kidnapper Philip Garrido, a convicted sex offender and religious fanatic, has been arrested with his wife.
Jaycee was kept in a well hidden garden shed for 18 years, living like a slave to her captor, who raped her and fathered her two children, now aged 11 and 15.
Mr. Probyn said: 'After 18 years, you do give up hope. This is a miracle.'
