Mischa Barton breaks silence on hospitalisation

Mischa Barton has spoken out for the first time on her recent stay in a psychiatric unit, and revealed that she hit 'rock bottom.'

The former OC actress was admitted to Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on 15th July, amongst rumours that she was suffering from a nervous breakdown.

Now, she has finally set the record straight, and blamed her issues on her teeth!

Speaking to Time Out New York, Barton revealed her problems started after having her wisdom teeth removed, leaving her in a huge amound of pain.

Combined with stress from work commitments, Mischa described, 'It was like a perfect storm, like everything was happening to me at once. The show, travel and then this fairly routine surgery that went wrong—it's still just healing. But I had to get through it without proper painkillers because I couldn’t take those during work. So it's been a nightmare.'

The resulting anxiety led her to put in a nonemergency call to the police, resulting in her involuntary hospitalisation.

'I was down in the dumps about everything there for a while' she described.

'Sometimes you have to hit rock bottom about things and have to get the most stressed-out just to feel better again. I got completely stressed-out and couldn’t handle everything, and now I feel really in control.'

As for whether she suffered a nervous breakdown, Mischa mused, 'I don’t know... I'm not sure I'm capable of a full-on nervous breakdown, but it was pretty bad... It was more about the pain, I have a newfound respect for people who have chronic pain.'

Barton is now back at work, filming the first series of new show The Beautiful Life.
