Michelle Obama flies flag for British fashion

Michelle Obama flew the flag for British fashion this week, stepping out at the White House's Evening of Poetry and Music in a top by London design duo, Basso & Brooke.

Known for supporting American labels, most notably the up-and-coming Jason Wu, Michael Kors and high street favourite J. Crew, the First Lady of Fashion switched her allegiance for the evening, to sport a Swarovski crystal-beaded, off-the-shoulder top from the designers' spring/summer '09 collection.

Proving her style credentials, not only was the top a glittering choice, but it was also customised specifically for the First Lady, shortened from its original length as a knee-length dress. She teamed it with a pair of Maison Martin Margiela white cropped trousers, silver peep-toe kitten heels, and some statement disc earrings.

This is not the first time that Mrs O has shown her support for the UK's design talent. Earlier this year she chose a dress by Scottish designer Jonathan Saunders, for a dance event in Washington, which she accessorised with a necklace by another leading light of British fashion, Richard Nicoll.

Basso & Brooke were the first winners of the Fashion Fringe competition, back in 2004. This is the first time that Mrs Obama has worn their designs.

Michelle Obama looks absolutely stunning here but defies any pre-conceived ideas of what a predident's wife should look like. Talk about the most powerful man in the world - Michelle surely makes every woman stop and stare with this wonderful image: truly the modern woman and completely inspiring.
