Mushrooms may protect against breast cancer

Women who eat a small portion of fresh mushrooms every day are 64 per cent less likely to develop breast cancer, scientists have discovered.

The Australian study of Chinese women, reported in the Telegraph, also looked at green tea consumption. It found that women who drink this regularly, and eat mushrooms daily, cut their risk of breast cancer by 90 per cent.

Although researchers say further studies are needed before a link is confirmed, tests on animals show that funghi have anti-tumour qualities and can help boost the immune system.

There is some evidence that mushrooms act in the same way as aromatose inhibitors, breast cancer drugs that block oestrogen production. The hormone oestrogen may encourage the development of cancer.

Breast cancer affects one in nine British women, and diet is thought to be a factor.
