Rihanna to testify against Brown

Marie Claire celebrity news: Rihanna and Chris Brown

Rihanna&search=">Rihanna would testify against her boyfriend Chris Brown, who is charged with assault, says her lawyer.

The Umbrella singer was allegedly assaulted by Brown after she found a three-page text message from another woman on Brown’s mobile phone.

The couple have reconciled after the attack, but US chat show queen Oprah Winfrey has warned Rihanna against staying with Brown.

The attack left the singer with Rihanna-s-injuries.html">severe facial injuries, pictures of which were published worldwide. A leaked police report from Brown’s arrest revealed that Brown allegedly punched, bit and choked Rihanna until she nearly lost consciousness.

Brown appeared in court last week to answer charges of assault likely to cause great bodily injury and making criminal threats.

Rihanna’s lawyer, Donald Etra, said she did not want a ‘no contact’ order issued against Brown, but said she will report any violations of an order prohibiting the 19-year-old singer from threatening, harassing or harming his girlfriend.

A court order grants her the authority to record any violations of the order.

She will also have to attend Brown’s trial as a witness if prosecutors subpoena her.

Etra said Rihanna wants the case over with quickly. ‘She wants to get along with her life and career,’ he said.

Although Rihanna has reportedly forgiven Brown, she has been warned off continuing the relationship by Oprah Winfrey.

Speaking on her chat show, Oprah urged the couple to seek counselling together – or finish the relationship.

‘It makes me so sad. The truth is that both Chris Brown and Rihanna, if I were your friend, I'd call and say: "Give it some time, get yourself counselling, take care of yourself and heal yourself first",’ she said.

Love doesn't hurt and if a man hits you once he will hit you again. I don't care what his plea is; he will hit you again.’

Oprah said she was issuing the warning for ‘all the Rihannas in the world’.

She said, ‘In our country the statistic is one out of four women being battered by their boyfriends.

‘Most don't tell because they're afraid that if they do [their abusive boyfriends] will break up with them.’
