Boob jobs and tummy tucks at record levels

The number of women resorting to boob jobs and tummy tucks rose by a third last year.

According to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (the BAAPS), breast augmentations, abdominoplasty and 'designer vaginas' were the three areas that saw a sharp increase in the number of operations in 2008. 

There has also been a sharp increase in the number of men having breast reduction surgery to remove their moobs, with numbers up 44% on the year before.

But the data showed that women accounted for 91% of all cosmetic surgery in 2008, with 31,183 going under the knife compared to 29,572 in 2007.

The most popular procedure was breast augmentation, up 30% at 8,439 operations, followed by eyelid surgery at 4,520, down from 5,148 in 2007.

Face and neck lifts came in at a respectable third as women strive for a more youthful look.

'Public interest in aesthetic surgery remained strong last year, especially in regards to specific procedures,' said Nigel Mercer, president of the BAAPS.

'Wide media coverage has helped to educate the public about the latest advances and choices available, and we are encouraged by the fact that more people are doing their research carefully and choosing reputable providers.

But he added: 'In the current climate, it is even more important patients seeking cosmetic surgical procedures do not make decisions based solely on price.'
