Caviar handed out to homeless people
By Suzannah Ramsdale on Tuesday 23 December 2008
Caviar might usually be a delicacy eaten by the rich and famous, but this Christmas it is the turn of the poor and homeless people of Milan to dine on the exclusive dish.
Officials in Italy have seized 40kg (88lb) of beluga caviar from smugglers in the Italian city – and just like their fashion, the people of Milan know top-notch grub when they see it.
So, rather then let £370,000 worth of caviar go to waste, they have decided to dish it up to care homes and to the poor and homeless.
'Last year, after a similar operation, we ended up destroying all the confiscated caviar,' said an official who dealt with the incident.
'This time, I came up with the idea of giving away all the caviar to the poor.'
Beluga is the most expensive of all caviar and it's banned in Italy to help protect the endangered beluga sturgeon.
