Regular walking cuts breast cancer risk
By Carla Bevan on Thursday 11 December 2008
Women who walk for just one hour a day could cut their chances of developing breast cancer in half.
Exercise is already widely seen as a good way of protecting against breast cancer as obesity increases the risk of the disease developing.
However, the latest study, which quizzed 30,000 women over 12 years, showed that the benefits could be far greater than previously imagined.
'We recommend walking for one hour a day, along with additional weekly exercise, to protect against breast cancer, regardless of menopausal status or body mass index,' researchers from Nagoya City University in Japan report.
In their study, women who walked every day and also jogged, swam or worked out at the gym once a week, were 55% less likely to develop breast cancer.
