OJ Simpson facing life in prison
By Suzannah Ramsdale on Friday 5 December 2008
OJ Simpson faces spending the rest of his life in prison when he is sentenced for kidnapping and armed robbery in Las Vegas later today.
Back in October, a jury unanimously found the disgraced star guilty of 12 charges including kidnapping, robbery and assault with a deadly weapon.
Simpson was convicted of recruiting five men to hold two sports memorabilia dealers at gunpoint in September last year.
Prosecutors have recommended that the 61-year-old should serve a total of 18 years for the offences.
But his lawyers have argued that Simpson had only been attempting to retrieve items that had previously been stolen from his trophy room, and therefore should be shown leniency with the minimum sentence of six years.
Thirteen years ago, Simpson was acquitted of murdering his wife, Nicole, and her friend, Ronald Goldman.
The former American footballer's lawyers have already voiced concerns that the trial had 'taken on a life of its own because of Mr Simpson's involvement,' and have confirmed Simpson will appeal.
