Blumenthal unveils Little Chef menu
By Suzannah Ramsdale on Friday 28 November 2008
Heston Blumenthal, the chef famous for bizarre dishes such as snail porridge and parsnip cereal, has finally unveiled his revamped Little Chef menu.
The TV chef, famous for inventing 'molecular gastronomy,' has teamed up with the roadside chain popular with truckers and motorists to overhaul its somewhat basic menu.
But don't worry, there won't be anything as weird and wonderful as his famous bacon and egg ice cream or his oyster jelly, the Michelin-starred chef is going to keep traditional favourites such as pancakes and all-day breakfasts, but give everything an upmarket twist.
With a promise to provide weary travellers with some much needed nutrients and better value, fish and chips, for example, will be made with Hake rather than Haddock, and will even come with bottle of pickled onion perfume spray for diners to spray under their nostrils as they eat to enhance the flavour.
The spruced-up menu is being trialled at the chain's Popham branch in Hampshire and, if it proves popular, Blumenthal's dishes could be used nationwide.
The chef, who owns The Fat Duck in Bray - one of the country's finest restaurants – admitted to being a little shocked at the state in which he found the Little Chef in, saying there weren't even any pots or pans.
'Everything was out of packets,' he said. 'I was probably quite snobbish when I started and I realised just how difficult it is.'
'There comes a time when you have to use the "compromise" word,' he added.
